"0"???? I'd say that might be a problem.

What are the relevant lines out of /etc/modules.conf (or conf.modules if
the former doesn't exist).

Don't give up on the G450 so quickly. You may have to set up X manually,
and get the latest version (4.0.2) along with the Matrox-provided binary
libHAL, but once you do that, not only will it have (relatively) full
OpenGL support, but you will be able to use both heads of the display.

Regarding other (newish) cards, it doesn't get much better. With nvidia,
you will have to deal with their non-DRI binary-only drivers, which while
fast, are rather buggy. As for ATI, the situation is very similar to
Matrox (still in development, needs tweaking, etc.).

See if you can override the auto-probing in the install (to begin with),
it sounds like it is detecting your monitor settings incorrectly.

Good point! However, doesn't IRQ 0 sometimes mean "auto-detect"?

> What are the relevant lines out of /etc/modules.conf (or conf.modules if

modules.conf follows:

    alias net-pf-4 ipx
    pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
    alias usb-interface usb-uhci
    alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
    alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1
    pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
    alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
    alias eth0 via-rhine

Thanks also for the link to the diagnostic programs, I'll run them right
away.

You forgot the DeCSS fiasco; DVDs should already have this sort of thing. :-)

This is presumably something not being pushed by Microsoft, but by
IT managers who want to lock down their systems, upon first read
of this newspost. Microsoft, of course, will register. One would
hope RedHat will, too.

It seems to me you might be in need of an 'options' line for the
module. I've had to do that on occasion.

The driver docs might have some pointers on this.

Look around the documents at http://www.scyld.com/network/ . The FA310
is a tulip (Lite-On Communications Inc LNE100TX ) design with a number
of variants. Most tulip chips are fairly fast, but there are occasional
problems, and there has been an issue with a deadlock in at least one
version of the driver. But almost all tulips will be able to pretty well
saturate a 100Mb network, something that an FA311 could never remotely
approach. But see Donald's excellent pages by following the url above.
There is a wealth of information there.

AFAICS, there is no perfect chipset available: they all seem to have
quirks and imperfections. But you are unlikely to see any of those
problems in day to day use.

I don't think that the distribution (SuSE, etc) has any relevance.

Thank you very much!

The problem is now fixed, and I am posting this reply using KNode on my
fully operational PPPoE connection, on a Linux box, connected to the
Internet :)

To explain what happened:
-I went to the above-mentioned page.
-I then downloaded the via-rhine.c diagnostic program. Compiled it. Ran it.
-Output from the program was: "The card has not been assigned an interrupt
number. [...other stuff...] Go see
http://www.scyld.com/expert/irq-conflict.html";
-Went and saw that web page. Right there, there was a paragraph saying:

No IRQ Assignment: Reported IRQ 0 or IRQ 255

If the card is reporting IRQ0 or IRQ255, that indicates the card has not
been assigned an interrupt. There are two likely fixes: either the BIOS
does not have enough IRQ lines available for PCI devices (e.g. all are
assigned to "legacy" ISA devices instead of "PnP"), or the BIOS has a "PnP
OS" or "Windows 9x support" setting that must be disabled. Yes, the "PnP
OS" label is confusing: setting "PnP OS" to on is actually bad.

-That was my problem. I went into the BIOS, disabled the "Plug & Play OS"
option, and this allowed the BIOS to assign interrupts to both my sound
card and NIC, fixing both my problems at once!

-Then rebooted into Linux, and ADSL worked from the first shot.

Thanks for pointing me to the diagnostic program; without it, I'd have
probably kept searching for a long time :)

Cheers,
Jonathan Joseph
