Can someone please tell me which version(s) of linux (kernel versions, and/or
distributions) allow files greater than 2G on an ext2 filesystem?
I tried 2.2.16, and while it accepts large disks (ie., breaks the 33G
filesystem barrier), it doesn't allow files bigger than 2G.
I need this because I'd like to backup a large fraction of a system with
dump.
Thanks,

Even at it's most bloated, the Linux kernel is a lightweight
when compared to either X or Netscape which an application of
this kind would spend it's most time in. The few K you save
in a kernel recompile is going to be dwarfed by what X or
Netscape consumer and whatever speed increase you think you
get out of a kernel recompile is going to be moot if you start
using too much swap.
Choosing the right video hardware (to ensure an effective driver)
would be more germane than tweaking the kernel.

RedHat put the various patches you need into the kernel and libc of their
6.2 release, if you want to go with a boxed solution. I think you can
recompile your libc with the appropriate configuration options and use a
recent kernel for the same results, but check this out using Google
first...

Get a tape drive if you have large amounts of data to back up. No 2G
limit there, and a backup made onto another hard drive in one machine
(or, $DEITY forbid, onto the SAME hard drive in one machine) is not a
very good backup as it's somewhat difficult to take offsite unless it's an
external SCSI, and even then, there can be problems....

Apologies if this is the wrong newsgroup for this posting. I trust the
ever-after-to-be-killed-flames will correct me if I am wrong.
Under Linux, my modem crawls. On my Mac I get up to 53kbps in the wee
hours and 26kbps during the day. On my Intel box I get the same results.
When I run Linux (2.2.16) on the Intel box I get a whopping 968 bps.
Sometimes, at night, I can achieve blistering speeds of 11 kbps.
Because it would be slightly more convenient to dl rpms directly
onto the intel box, I'd like to speed up the modem. It's a diamond
something or other. I don't believe the problem lies within the hardware.
I do believe the problem lies within my wvdial.conf, or gnome-ppp, or
pppd. I tried using the same init strings I use on my Mac/Hayes56, but
no joy.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Has anyone a solution?
Thanks all, and Linux Rules
[except for Macintosh, of course. Nyah, Nyah. ;-D
[Did that lose me some kindly-offered advice? Oh, well, so it goes.]]

The reason that I said that it was the reset that corrupted the
filesystems is that I've done this to myself on several occasions, I've
reset the machine deliberately when X was wedged, a couple of times
because I wasn't thinking, and I've also seen it happen because of power
failures (I've fixed the power problem with a UPS, fixing my own
stupidity is another matter).
If you don't have multiple partitions on your machine, you might want to
buy a copy of PartitionMagic (assuming that its a dual boot system, I
don't think that Partition Magic can run directly on Linux).
PartitionMagic can resize partitions without losing any data. I always
set up my partitions as follows
/ Used for the OS and Redhat installed applications
/home Everything else, including all data and user installed
applications
I link /opt to /home/opt and /usr/local to /home/usr/local.
By setting things up this way I can always blow / away and do a clean
install without losing anything. Since I'm constantly messing with
things and shooting myself in the foot this setup is like having a pair
of steel towed boots.
I've also seen Netscape go nuts and eat all of the system resources
which seems like a crash.

Actually, there's good reason for caps lock defaulting to OFF... From
"drivers/char/keyboard.c"...
/*
* Some laptops take the 789uiojklm,. keys as number pad when NumLock
* is on. This seems a good reason to start with NumLock off.
*/
And the next line is:
#define KBD_DEFLEDS 0
I think #define'ing it as 1 will do the trick, but don't quote me. :)

Subject: 61GB Maxtor HD problem, please help!
Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 20:39:32 -0500
Hi all,
Just purchased a 61GB Maxtor HD. I'm running RH6.1 Linux version 2.2.5-22smp
with an dual Intel P450 setup, all SCSI stuff except CDROM and this EIDE HD.
Never had any trouble with the system.
At first I ran into the 32GB limit for my bios. Upgraded my bios and my bios
detects the HD fine now.
Get into linux, detected fine. fdisk it to full size(it's for data storage) and
format using mke2fs. Formated fine.
Mounting it went fine the first time, used it, benchmarked it, etc. fine. I did
notice however that the size only ended up being:
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 56450776 5408896 51041880 10% /us1
when the total should be a few gigabytes higher.
I rebooted and upon boot it said my /dev/hda1 had errors and forced a check. It
just went too long, so I killed it.
If I try to mount it now, I get errors. The actual data seems totally fine, so
I don't know why it's saying there are errors.
I'm thinking maybe some of my bintools or kernel needs upgrading, but am not
sure.
Here's the errors I get when trying to mount now:
Jun 23 20:15:08 kerr kernel: EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running
e2fsck is recommended
Jun 23 20:15:08 kerr kernel: EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)):
ext2_check_blocks_bitmap: Wrong free blocks count for group 0, stored = 7691,
counted = 7704
Jun 23 20:15:35 kerr kernel: EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)):
ext2_check_blocks_bitmap: Wrong free blocks count for group 3295, stored = 7704,
counted = 3568
Jun 23 20:15:44 kerr kernel: EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)):
ext2_check_blocks_bitmap: Wrong free blocks count for group 4033, stored = 7704,
counted = 7703
etc for many groups. I interrupt it, and it's mounted, and I can use the data
fine.
Before, other errors I got were like:
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound },
CHS=65535/12/54, sector=66060026
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound },
CHS=65535/12/54, sector=66060026
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound },
CHS=65535/12/54, sector=66060026
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound },
CHS=65535/12/54, sector=66060026
Jun 22 21:35:48 kerr kernel: ide0: reset: success
I question if anything is actually wrong with the drive since the data is fine.
I plan on sticking the HD on another system to see what happens.
I can't leave it automounted in /etc/fstab or else it just wants to check it all
the time, so I mount it manually when I did the above.
Anybody experience this? Have solution? Anyone with definite knowledge?
Many thanks,
Jonathan McKinney

If you want a distro that supports USB out of the box, try Mandrake.
To my knowledge, USB on any other distribution will require you to
manually rebuild your kernel: a non-trivial task.

Your version of X is more important than kernel version for full
graphics card support. See the XFree86 site, as well as LhD, for detailed
information on the *specific* card(s) you are considering. There are so many
that are compatible nowadays that it is very hard to answer your question
in general. It all depends on how much you want to spend, what features you
need/want, etc.

I have an old SDT-5000 DDS2 DAT streamer from Sony which i used in an
old server. Since i have a new one now, I found that during the SCSI bus
scan at boot time (i've tried two different host adapters - NCR53c810
and NCR53c875) the streamer seems to be initialising forever and the
SCSI driver waits forever then. If i now cut the power to the streamer,
the boot process continues without problems.
This strange behavior only appears to be under Linux, Windows is fine.
My current Firmware is 3.02.
Any ideas??

Subject: Help! Really Confused...
Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 01:45:50 GMT
I need to know if Linux will work for me... my situation is this:
I looked at the OSs supported by my video card, a Diamond Stealth II
G460 (Intel i740 chipset), and Linux is not one of them. Also, it's not
listed in XFree86's 3.3.6 video card list (though Stealth II S220 is...
I don't know if that implies mine is also compatible).
However, in the XFree86 4.0's video driver status page, it says:
"Support (accelerated) for the Intel i740 is provided by the 'i740'
driver"
For 3.3.6 it says:
"Support (accelerated) for the Intel i740 is provided by the XF86_SVGA
server with the i740 driver"
Now I don't know too much about Linux, which is why I'm asking... I'm
confused, does this mean I can run Linux (I'm planning on getting Red
Hat) with X Windows or not? And if so, could there be complications?
Thanks a lot,
