Looks like that might be the problem. This is what I've found so far:
Here is a clip from the udma-generic docs:
The real work involved in setting up the chips for DMA transfers is
done mostly by the BIOS of each motherboard. Now of course one
hopes that the BIOS has been correctly programmed...
For example, the ASUS SP-97V motherboard with its original BIOS
(Rev. 1.03) would malfunction with the modified Linux driver in
both DMA mode 2 and UDMA modes; it would work well using PIO mode
4, or under Windows 95 in all modes. I downloaded the latest BIOS
image (Rev. 1.06) from the ASUS Web site and flashed the BIOS EPROM
with the latest BIOS revision. It has been working perfectly ever
since (at 66 MHz bus speeds).
What this tells us is that the BIOS sets up the DMA controller with
specific timing parameters (active pulse and recovery clock
cycles). My initial BIOS revision probably had bad timings. Since
the Windows 95 driver sets up those timings by itself (i.e. it does
not depend on the BIOS to setup the hard disk controller timing
parameters), I initially had problems only with the Linux driver,
while Windows 95 worked well.
So, let me state this again: this Linux (U)DMA driver depends on
the BIOS for correct (U)DMA controller setup. If you have problems,
first check that you have the latest BIOS revision for your
specific motherboard.
...
New BIOS revisions can be downloaded from your motherboard
manufacturer's Web site. Flashing a new BIOS image is a simple
operation but one must strictly follow the steps explained on the
motherboard manual. Late Award BIOS revisions seem stable with
respect to UDMA. Anything with a date of 1998 should be fine.
My BIOS is from 1996. So, I'm thinking the timings are off. I'm going
up upgrade it tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have to go through
www.BIOSUpgrade.com. I have to buy it, then they send me all this crap.
God knows how long it will take. I'd still appreciate any other input
you might have. This problem isn't fully solved yet. Thanks for all
your help! This is the MOST helpful board for Linux, you guys are great
(I posted this problem on about four other message boards with not one
single answer!)
PS: What is the correct procedure and boot-up floppy to use when
flashing the BIOS under Linux?
Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
Before you buy.

No. He is asking about a UMSDOS filesystem, which is a filesystem completely
conatined in a contiguous file on your DOS/Windows filesystem. This is not
the same thing as an msdos/vfat file system, which you seem to be describing here.
I think Corel linux, and maybe Slackware (my first Linux 7 years ago was a
Slackware UMSDOS install) support this. I'm pretty sure Redhat DOES NOT.
Personally I don't think it is really easier. After a couple months after doing
this myself (granted, a long time ago), my UMSDOS partition mysteriously got
corrupted and I had to reinstall. The only thing that is really easier is
deleting linux, but who would want to do that? ;-)

Can anyone suggest a good script/program to post some binaries to usenet
after ripping a CD? I'd prefer a slrn - solution, but I'm willing to try
something else. Something that generates a file for each segment,
complete with headers, message-id's etc. would probably be the most
useful.
Any suggestions?

Hi there,
it sounds like you do not have any partition on the disk. In this case
try
fdisk /dev/yourdisk
and partition it as you require, do not forget create filesystem later.

Subject: I killed the modem
Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 09:01:17 -1000
I fiddled with trying to install my LT Winmodem (which didn't work, as I am
sure most of you know) and now my external modem is hosed.... I haven't
changed any of the settings in kppp for the external, but when I try to
connect i get 'modem busy'.... what files or conf settings can I
delete/zero out to return my linux box(mandrake 7.1) to previous condition
that worked perfectly.
I suffer from the same infliction as most linux users.. .I love tinkering
and trying to make things better.. sometimes I guess I have to pay the price
thanks in advance

Lutz:
It seems to me that the data could be written to a hard drive on the
embedded machine. YOu could then NFS from the embedded machine, and write
the program on the "Monitor machine" to read until EOF upon startup, place
a marker of some sort at EOF, then every 5 seconds or so, search from the
marker to EOF, write a new marker, etc, etc, etc....
Something to that effect should work for you, maybe... Depends on wether the
embedded machine has a hard drive to write to, and a way to allow NFS...
Just my two cents.

Hi there,
you did not gave info about CD-RW - IDE/SCSI - Model/Manufacture/SCSI card?
Most drives will work. You can have a problem with installation on this HDD -
it is supported in experimental kernels only or you have to patch you kernel,
but for sure it will not install out of the box. You can try to install RedHat
7 which oficialy not out yet. Some questions can rise with 815E chipset, but I
guess that it will works - only may be not at full performance.
