Hi,
I would like to set up a network of about 5 to 6 PCs running windows, all
hooked up to a Linux server, which would act as a gateway to the internet
for the other machines. My question is, what hardware will I need for this,
all of the machines now have an ethernet card in them; and what brands
and/or models would you recommend. This is the first network I have ever
set up, so am not even certain what I need to buy. I am assuming I will
need a switch and another ethernet card for the server.
TIA,
Fred

Run a Advansys controller under SuSe 6.1 and its fine. I know thats not what
you asked.

I'll second that reccomendation. I use one of those drives
at home. The drive was cheap compared to DAT and the like.
Mine's been working reliably for nearly a year now, and I'm
quite happy with the Seagate TR-5 drive.

Subject: Inno3D Tornado GeForce 2MX - Problems with Nvidia kernel driver
Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 14:13:48 -0500
When I try to use the NVidia Kernel driver, "NVdriver", with XFree86 4.0.2
using the "device=nvidia" line in the XFree86-4 file, I get a weird error:
I get some garbage on the screen, then X loads fine. However after I unload
X (i.e. log-out of KDE) I can't switch back to Console mode - my display
displays the blinking warning light and shuts off... I then have to
cold-reboot (i.e. power down) the system AND turn off the monitor and turn
it back on.
My system setup is as follows:
- PIII 700/128MB RAM/45 GB HDD
- Inno3D Tornado Geforce2 MX
- RedHat Linux 7.0
- Linux Kernel 2.4.1
- XFree86 4.0.2
I used a basic RH7 install and then updated pretty much everything, I'm
using a recompield 2.4.1 kernel and XFree86 4.0.2.
Here's my problem. I downloaded the Nvidia driver version 0.9.6, using the
src RPM since I figured I couldn't use the default RH7 RPM for my
customized system. I compiled my kernel with support for AGP-GART, DRI and
framebuffer support etc. etc. etc.
I built the RPM and installed it, and the driver loads fine, I have a
kernel module loaded called "NVdriver". I changed the line in XFree86
Config to read "device=nvidia" instead of "device=nv". The module loads
fine, and as I mentioned above, I can run X fine too... It's just after I
quit that the problems start?
Any help with this would be most appreciated.

I had a similar problem installing RH7 on my Micron TREK 2 notebook. I
solved it by telling the Phoenix BIOS that my installed OS was "Other"
instead of "Windows" or "DOS".

I have the same card, although I only use it with Windows. A bit of
experimenting and some info from someone else in this group revealed that
the Asus windows drivers don't actually support proper OpenGL (with left &
right buffers). Rather it is a hack to make OpenGL games work in stereo
(since few if any explicitly support stereo).

If they're just surfing the net or doing email, a hub will do. If
they'll be doing file transferes or the like, the extra $100 for a switch
will pay off very soon. Other than that, you just need a PC w/ethernet for
the linux server, an Internet connection, and to read the IP-masquerading
howto.

Subject: How to set up SCSI in Red Hat 7?

Hi everyone
*** NEWBIE ALERT!!!! ************
I want to install a SCSI card for SCSI support for a scanner I want to buy
in my PC, and I have no idea how to go about this. Does Red Hat 7's kudzu
automatically detect the SCSI card after I plug it in, or do I need to do
something more?
If anyone knows a decent brand of SCSI card that is compatible with Red Hat
7 etc. pls let me know!!
Also, if I do 'lsmod', 'usbcore' and usb-uhci are listed. Does this mean I
have some sort of USB support? I am using the default kernel with Red Hat
7, i.e 2.2.16-22. I thought USB support only came with kernel version 2.4?
Forgive me if these questions are too stupid or basic, I'm a newbie!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Subject: Can't get Matrox G400 Dual Monitor to work!!
Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 20:22:55 GMT
Hello:
First question....How do I check which version of X server I am running
? (And hwere can I get the right one if I'm wrong?)
I have done a custom install of RH 7.0 from scratch. I tell the install
I am running a MGA G400 with 32 MB of memory. I do not select any X
servers under the "X Hardware suppport" category. The only thing I selcet
from that category is X configurator4.4.3-1
Under the "X" folder under the "User interface" category I select
XFree86.4.0.1-1 Once the install has finished I go back and look at my
rpms that have been installed under GnomeRPM and I see under "X
Hardware Support" I have XFree86-SVGA 3.3.6-33 installed. Is the the X
server it is using??
I went to Matrox's site for the G400 MAX and and under latest drivers
they have listed as beta for linux 1.00.004 I download the driver
mga_drv.o and the README file. The readme file says the following (in
excerpts)
"This release is based on the previous XFree86 beta driver and also
includes support for the G400. Supported features include DualHead..etc"
"This driver can either be installed by adding the mga_drv.o module to a
working installation of XFree86 4.0.1 (what I tried to do) or by
compiling the module from source."
"A working install of XFree86 4.0.1 is required before the driver can be
installed. Recent Linux distributions such as RH 7.0 come with the
option if installing Xfree86 4.0.1 (Where is that option?) However
Unless specified during a custom install, the setup program may install
XFree86 3.3.6 as the default X server. If that is the case you can
easily switch to the version 4.0.1 by linking X to the proper binary:
cd /etc/X11
ln -sf /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 ./X"
When I try this and rebppt my machine my machines crawls to a halt and X
runs to slow to use.
I see both config files in the /etc/X11
XF86Config and XF86Config-4
When I replace the mga_drv.o file nothing happens.
The last ting I have problems with is where they tell me to check the
BusID. (This needs to match in my XF86Config-4 file)
when I run the following command
startx >& Xoutput.log
I do not get any information about what BusID
example
PCI:*(2:0:0)
Can someone please help me check to make sure I am running X server
4.0.1 and how I can install it from default when I first build the
system..or upgrade to it afterward.
Thanks
Chris Nelson

Since real-time stereo support is implementation-dependent, there's no
guarantee that it will be possible. I'm no Linux expert-- but it's
possible that you may have to use a software OGL implementation to get
what you want. Another possibility is to do left and right renderings
off-screen or off-line separately & then display them.

I have been reading the bootraid cookbooks and howtos and everything
that might have to deal with a software raid 5 being booted and mounted
as /. I wish I could say they have been helpful, but they are out of
date, and don't work very well with a 2.4.1 kernel. I was wondering if
anyone has gotten / to mount on a raid 5 (softraid) and if so, how they
did it. Any help would be great. My current setup is this.
/dev/hda (20 gig drive that will be the boot drive, and /home/user)
/dev/md0 (120 gig raid 5 drive, that I want as /)
/dev/hdc \
/dev/hdg \
/dev/hdi 60 gig maxtor IDE drives.
This is a fresh Debian install, and I have been using it as an admin for
a while, but just have not been able to get this to work.
Any help would be great.

I can't get my printer to print to my Canon BJC-2010 from either of my
new RH6.2 installations: my router or my (dual-booting) laptop. The
laptop WILL print to it when booted into Win98, and the router WILL
print to it when I boot it from a Win98 hard drive. In both Win98s, the
IRQ is automatically set to "7".
The following info is also true for both machines:
==================
- after booting up, there is nothing about parport or IRQ7 showing in
the /proc directory.
Is that normal?
===================
- But after I try a 'cat /etc/printcap > /dev/lp0' (which produces NO
response from the printer), I _do_ find a /proc/parport directory, with
an '0' directory, containing 4 entries. The 'hardware' entry shows
base: 0x378
irq: 7
dma: none
modes: SPP,PS2
When I run 'dmesg', I see
parport 0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,PS2]
parport 0: Printer, Canon BJC-2000, and
lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven)
Does all that look reasonable? Or should there be a setting for the
dma?
====================
My /etc/conf.modules file contains the lines
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc and
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7,auto
What should I now try? I've run out of ideas.
