You should need a driver for the card. A lot of the cards bundled with scanners
are barely scsi-standard compliant. If you can find a driver for it and it
works then great, but you may be needing to buy a 'proper'scsi card.

First for permissions:
you might like to create a link /dev/scanner that points to /dev/sg2. You can
create a group, e.g. 'scanner' and change the group ownership of the device
to that group. Then you can give whichever users membership of that group,
that should allow them access.
I might be wrong on this one but....
isn't xsane the backend to xscanimage? In other words, xscanimage is the
piece of software you 'see' and interact with. To put it this way, if
xscanimage allows you to scan and preview etc in X, then what would xsane do?
I recal that the response to your trying to run 'xsane' yourself is that same
that I got when trying to do the same thing. I believe that xsane is actually
working fine (hence xscanimage works).
Regards, Guy.

This'll have to be quick as I'm short on time.
Go to the linux documentation project
http://doc.rmplc.co.uk/linux/LDP/HOWTO/XWindow-User-HOWTO.html
should tell you how to set up what you want. You'll be wanting to edit
the config for gdm, as you run gnome I'd imagine. It'll involve sticking
'xset dpms x y z' in the relevant file (the doc should tell you what
that file is), x y and z are the time delays for blank, standby and
powerdown (IIRC)
Guy
If I'm right then this should apply to a gdm login window as well as
when a user is logged in.

: IDE has always been somewhat slower. And the smaller the density, the

: probably give dramatically better results...cluster size is important.
: But if you want something really fast, get the ultra 160 with a 64 bit
: PCI...it exceeds expectations, and the drives themselves aren't that
: much different in price from older scsi technology (yes, this far
: exceeds the price of IDE, it also vastly outperforms it).
I don't expect how fast it would be.
But being much slower than older drives make it unforgivable.

Despite what is advertised on its box, netgear FA311 cards don't work
with Linux (Atleast not with kernel 2.2.*) Tulip driver doesn't work
with it. It comes with it's own linux driver that was written for 2.0.36

this assessment;and are there any solutions to fix this?

Nothing is actually "wrong" about this. The drive has just been
translated differently. Just calculate C*H:
3736*255=952680
59554*16=952864
As you see it's nearly identical.

This is a problem mentioned in the <a
href=http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Large-Disk-HOWTO.html>Large Disk
HOWTO</a>. Strangely enough, it says that "once the problem is
recognized, it is easily solved" (wording may not be exact). However, I
never fully understood why it was easily solved. If you read the howto,
it might help you.
> and the system hangs.
This just MIGHT be a consequence of something mentioned in the <a
href=http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA.html>Ultra-DMA mini-
HOWTO</a>. Namely that enabling UDMA for certain drives on certain
controllers with certain kernel versions will cause a system hangup.
Try disabling UDMA with hdparm. It might or might not work. If I were
you, I'd wait for someone else to reply to this and compare answers.

This would be consistent with the above theory, as that drive doesn't
use UDMA.
Good luck!

What have you been trying? I have an HP LJ 4 MV and I used printtool to
set
up the printer in this way:
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:rm=ljmv4:\
:rp=raw:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\
:sh:
The remote port is 'raw' and I set it up to be a Postscript printer.

No, since you've got kernel 2.2.14, 2.2.15 wouldn't be what you want.

If you want a single source patch to kernel 2.2.16 for:
cd/dvd fixes (not the ioctls)

There are a couple of others there that add many of the RedHat kernel

OK I know this from past, but to find it on mobo which boasts 112M bus

Anyway, how would this affect the changing of resolution in X-windows
and what will respond to it - mobo speed or screen or both?

Hi Jon, I know this chapter.
I think you meant "11.1 Bios complications" of the HOWTO. But I am not sure
if this situation holds for me, because at the beginning of the
chapter, it is said that the problem disappeared since 2.2.2 and I have
2.2.14. So here I should be on the safe side.
At the end of the chapter it is mentioned that this can happen, if
the disk was partitioned using a geometry translation. I will have
a closer look to this by inspecting the MBR of the disk or by just deleting
the MBR and using Debians cfdisk for a new partition table. But normally
I also should have no problems here, because I used the Win95b fdisk
first and this support disks greater than 8,4GB and the Debian cfdisk
also had no problems to interprete this partition table correctly.

Thanx for the link to this HOWTO, I was not aware that it can help
me. I will have a look at it immediately.
BTW but all this does not explain why my Debian2.0 system with a
2.0.36 kernel works as expected (for a Linux system :) ) and why
there are still problems if I use parameters to specify the geometry ?!
Thanx for the tips,

Because of the limitations of the ISA bus, you will never get 100Mbit
out of an ISA card. Best you can get is about 20Mbit, but "10/100" ISA
cards are sort of difficult to find and pricey. See if you can pick up
a 3Com509--they're reliable, easy to configure (DOS 3C5X9CFG.EXE will do
it, or there's a Linux utility that can reprogram the EEPROM for a
specific IRQ/IO), work great with Linux, and cheap.

FUJITSU Model: M2513E on Adaptec AIC-7880U/Symbios810/860, from 2.2.x to 2.4.0,
(Pentium/PentiumII/Alpha/K7): No problems. With non-limdow disks about 800kb/s
write, 2000kb/s read.
Maybe you are experiencing a weird termination problem...

What is the recommended configuration to use this mouse as a 3-button mouse?
thanks, jo

We are building an ftp server, does anyone know if this particular
controller works with RH6.2? I went to redhat.com's website for info,
however
was unsuccessful with this. NE nfo is greatly apprecciated.
