I'm trying to set up an adaptec 2940u2w to boot directly into linux. The
disk works fine when I do a lilo boot from a floppy. I have the adaptec
scsi select set to include the drive in the bios scan, and to boot the unit
number of the drive, and the motherboard bios to try the adaptec before the
ide drive (MB is Intel 440-BX 'Jabil'), and it sure looks like YaST (SuSE
6.3) is writing to the MBR of the scsi drive when I do a lilo config, but it
sure don't boot! Is this supposed to work?

Yes, there is. That's why my Plextor burner is in the lowest slot,
and the SCSI CD-ROM is in the top slot.
You can buy longer cables, but it's probably better to move the drive,
if you can.

I've been trying to install Red Hat seven all day and I keep getting
there, only to find that my monitor is configured wrong. The 750s is
not listed in the installation-configuration menu so I've been trying to
use a generic monitor or a Samsung of a narrower range. None of it has
worked. I can get command line version to install but the graphical
interface seems to cause a problem when I try to reboot after the
installation.

Do I need to get a specific driver file for this monitor? If so, what
do I do with it once I download it?

I have a Promise controller integrated into my ASUS A7V133
motherboard, and it appears to work fine. I had to apply Andre
Hedrick's patch to the 2.2.18 source in order to get the Promise
driver. It's a standard part of the 2.4 kernels, but I have some
reservations about switching to 2.4 just yet.
I was preparing a drive for another system, and having a spare channel
let me keep drive jumpered as master. The ATA100 controller handled
an older UDMA33 drive just fine.
Now that everyone's switched to ATA100, you should be able to find the
Promise ATA66 controller for less than $30. It won't work with a
stock kernel, but if you aren't booting from it, patching and
compiling a new kernel is not a big deal. Check for the previous
Promise controller threads, as I think that at least one distribution
has included the Promise driver. So, right now installation requires
some fiddly bits, but support will be standard in the future.

/usr/src/linux-2.4.0/Documentation/Changes says you have to have a least
version 2.4.0 of pppd.
You can get the source at ftp://linuxcare.com.au/pub/ppp/. Don't know about an
RPM, never use them.

Yes. I have an onboard AIC7895 which I've used to boot just fine.
You might get more help if you described what, exactly, went wrong.
Did you see any part of the "LILO" message, or does the BIOS simply
report it can't boot from the device? When installing LILO, does it
do anything like warn you about possibly not installing on the boot
device?

Subject: Ker-Clunk on Western Digital Drive - Normal for Linux?
Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 05:52:07 GMT
Folks,
I know that's a real technical term (ker-clunk, that is), but that is
what I am hearing from my drive.
It is a WD400BB, a 40GB IDE drive from Western Digital. This is my
fifth Western Digital drive (the other 4 are still in service with no
problems), and I have been very impressed and happy with their quality
(thus far).
However, occasionally I will hear a 'ker-clunk' sound from the drive.
And after I have thought about it, I seem to only hear it when using
Linux.
The only thing I can think of is that I put my /boot partition near
the front of the drive, and the rest of the linux files are at the
back of the drive, and the sound I get is when it goes back and forth.
(I did this because I was installing Redhat v6.2, and could not get
LILO to work otherwise, as the main partition was past the 1024 cyl.)
Is this normal? I have never had this happen before, but then again,
I never have had to split the /boot and / partitions for linux. Does
the system have to occasionally go back to the /boot drive, and thus
causing this problem?
Anybody else had this experience? If you have, has it only been in
linux with this configuration, or has it been with Windows 9X., NT,
etc.?
I've called WDC and asked them about this, and they say the problem
must be in the controller, the cable, or the power supply (I think he
was reading off the web site!) To be fair, I did run extended
diagnostics on the drive, and it reports ok.
I've got maybe a week to take it back (bought it 1/28/01), then I'd
have to RMA it with WDC.
Any suggestions on what's going on or what I should do?
Thanks in advance,
RJ

My USR modem is working under 2.2.16. In fact, it worked under 2.2.10 until

Have you tried your modem in 2.2.16? What doesn't work?

This may not be it at all, but I'll give you my $0.02. I have the same board
which I've been using for quite a while under linux. I use lilo, and I've
found that I need to compile the aic7xx support (I think that's the name)
directly into the kernel... I'm sure there's a workaround with modules,
but if I don't compile it into the kernel, it hangs on boot. If you're not
even getting a boot prompt, then this is probably not the issue. Answers to
Eric's questions would probably shed some more light on the real problem...

My system has 2 physical USB root hubs on the motherboard (One built in and
the other on a PCI card). I'm using Mandrake 7.2. Both work fine under
windows, but in Linux only the hub on the PCI card has it's devices
detected. Any idea why?
I'm fairly confident that Linux surports the builtin hub as my USB zip drive
which is connected to it was detected when I installed Mandrake but
disappeared as soon as the syetem booted.
Also, I know the zip drive is set up and configured, because if i plug it
into the PCI card it works fine.
Cheers

Have you included SCSI-emulation in your kernel ?
I'm using it with my Fujifilm 1400Zoom. The camera is connected to the
computer via USB and the Smartmedia Flash-card registers itself as
/dev/sda1. Thius wont work without SCSI-emulation and USB Mass-storage
though. Include SCSI-emulation, SCSI support and generic scsi support and
try again.
