you dont say i fyou are using OSS or ALSA but if using ALSA use the
alsactl command to restore your mixer settings that are stored in
alsasound.conf I believe. Run the alsamixer, exit, and first use
alsactl to store those settings and then in your boot script use the
same command to restore those mixer settings.

with oss I'm not sure

Hi,

I have Red Hat Linux 6.1 with the 2.2.12-20 kernel. And I just
installed a Hewlett Packard CD-Writer 9310i. It works in Windows and it
suggests with it being set to the "Cable Select" jumper. I'm just
wondering if Linux works with Cable Select? Or do I have to put the
jumper on Slave or Master? My CD-Reader which came with the computer is
Master I think (probably). So does that mean I put the CD-Burner on the
Slave jumper? And also if I have Plug and Play enabled on Linux will it
autodetect the CD-Writer? If not, is there any other way?

Please tell me anything on making it work, thanks.

And the 530-TX uses the via-rhine driver.

Try to login as root or su to root and use "netconfig" to configure
the network.

Subject: Problems w/ yamaha CRW6416SZ

I'm running the 2.2.16 kernel and I have an Iwill SIDE-2935UW SCSI
card connected to the Yamaha internally and an AIWA 4mm DAT
externally. The problem is that wherever I have the CDRW drive and
any other external device connected my system hangs shortly after
trying to access the CDRW drive. The other device works fine but the
CDRW never responds. The system hangs so I have to power cycle it and
the Yamaha drive error light blinks.

I have the termination as follows:

SCSI card off
CDRW on
4mm DAT on

Things are connected thusly:

         external internal
AIWA 4mm DAT <--------> SCSI card <--------> Yamaha CDRW

Any help or pointers on how to get this to work is greatly
appreciated.

Let's see if I can put it differently. Maybe it's more of a compiler
problem. Take Xkeyboard, I used to be able to compile and run this
program (the version I used with Slacware 96). When I updated my
Slackware, Slackware had switched to using ecgs. Now when ever I compile
this version Xkeyboard and try to run it I get a seg. fault, it compiles
fine not even a single error. As a matter of fact a lot of things didn't
work any more. You could be right about the core dumps, though. I
thought that there was a switch in the kernel config also. I thought
that that's how I got rid of the core files, that I got tired of
tracking down and deleting.

;) You didn't say which Canon printer you have, but if it is a Windows
only printer chances are it won't work with Linux.

Hi,

Sounds like an IDE CD Writer... You will need to build a kernel with the
SCSI emulation switched on. Check out the file
/usr/doc/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO for details.

If possible I would put the Writer on the master jumper and the CD
reader on slave. Last time I tried XCDroast it wasn't happy about a
'slave' writer even though it showed up in the list of devices.

You will need to change the link /dev/cdrom to point to /dev/scd0 (I
think that is what the emulated disks become). No doubt the HOWTO will
mention this...

The one issue you should be aware of if you are using AMD to save
money is that you cannot go cheap on the memory. Linux really
needs to have good, high quality memory.

Also, if you have one of those motherboards that uses both kinds
of memory, be aware that the 72 pin implementation on some of
those motherboards is not very good. Return your 72 pin memory to
the store and get the good stuff.

I also had terrible problems with overheating the first time I
tried an AMD, but that was because I had a ribbon cable caught
in the fan. ;)

I 'm developping an application on a embedded PC (mother board : Adastra
Systems VNS 786), onto which I installed Linux.

Sometimes, the computer reboots suddenly. I first though that it was a problem
of temperature, which is quite high in the box. That's why I put a fan, but the
problem was still there.

Then I noticed that the bug happened every time I do a specific command (make
dep, when I recompiled the kernel). The computer rebooted, and when it checked
the hard disk, it rebooted again. But the problem can appear with other
commands.

That's why I think it's an incompatibility between Linux and my hardware. But I
don't know exactly where !
