Hi folks,

I'm trying to get a HP Colorado 8GB IDE-Tape to
backup my
data. The following error occurs on issuing a tar
cvf /dev/ht0 .
ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 1e, key = 5, asc =
20, ascq = 0
I tried several things, setting the tape from
master to slave,
using a different kernel version (now 2.2.16 with
some more
ide-patches) upgrading the tape's bios from 2.06
to 2.08.
But nothing helped.
I noticed, that I'm not the only only with this
problems. Did
anyone who experienced the error above got rid of
it?

Have you made sure that the kernel supports your IDE controller chipset? My
HPT366 wasn't properly supported until the 2.4.0-test kernels were
released. I only recently got the drive to work in UDMA66 with the test4
kernel. Everything is peachy now though, I am getting 21.5MB/s with a
5400rpm drive.

Heh, that's like saying if you choose a pentium optimised kernel the whole
distro is pentium optimised.

The majority (everything apart from the kernel) of SuSE, even 6.4, is
compiled for i386 (or ppc, apx etc) and does not use 3dnow. The kernel
doesn't do enough maths for the 3dnow patch to make a significant
difference. If you want 3dnow support in packages that will make real use of
it you need to recompile them yourself (things like xmms/mpg123 spring to
mind).

The kernel is optimised for it, everything else isn't.

I have an ACER with a NeoMagic 128ZV+ and 800x600 LCD
screen. This was not recognised properly by Slackware 3.6 or
redhat 5.2, and ran only in 640x480, which was pretty awful.
I got a replacement SVGA X-server, and config file from
somwhere out there (sorry - I can't remember where), and
this worked. However I have now put in a recent Corel Linux,
and this worked straight off the CD.

The SVGA driver (dated 1998) was patched, and I expect the
patch has now become part of the release. If you need it and
can't find it email me, and I will send it.

Good luck

Peter

The reason there's no HOWTO for the HP Colorado is that it would be only
5 or 6 lines long, which is far below the minimums for HOWTOs. Just
kidding. Here's a start (2.2.x kernels).

The HP Colorado EIDE streaming TRAVAN tapes can use either ATAPI or SCSI
emulation but not both. My personal preference is SCSI emulation
however there is no performance difference.

1. Kernel configuration.

1a. ATAPI. Under BLOCK DEVICES select IDE/ATAPI TAPE support
(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE).

1b. SCSI emulation. Under BLOCK DEVICES select SCSI emulation support
(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI). Under SCSI support select SCSI tape support
(CONFIG_SCSI, CONFIG_CHR_DEV_ST). Deselect IDE/ATAPI tape support (see
1a).

1c. Rebuild kernel, reboot.

2. Tape device identification.

After reboot, check 'dmesg' output for similar output as one of these:

2a. ATAPI.
...
kernel: hdb: HP COLORADO 20GB, ATAPI TAPE drive
...
kernel: ide-tape: hdb <-> ht0: HP COLORADO 20GB rev 4.01
kernel: ide-tape: hdb: overriding capabilities->speed (assuming
950KB/sec)
kernel: ide-tape: hdb: overriding capabilities->max_speed (assuming
950KB/sec)
kernel: ide-tape: hdb <-> ht0: 950KBps, 13*32kB buffer, 9248kB pipeline,
60ms tDSC, DMA
..........................^^^
In this example the tape is physically attached to ide0 as a Slave
(hdb), the kernel device associated with hdb is 'ht0'. Tape access will
be via /dev/ht0? and /dev/nht0? (see st(4). Most people link /dev/tape
to the norewind device (cd /dev; ln -s nht0 tape).

2b. SCSI emulation.
...
kernel: hdb: HP COLORADO 20GB, ATAPI TAPE drive
...
kernel: scsi1 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
...
kernel: Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun
0
kernel: Vendor: HP Model: COLORADO 20GB Rev: 4.01
kernel: Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision:
02
kernel: Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
...........................^^^
In this example the tape is physically attached to ide0 as a Slave
(hdb), the kernel device associated with hdb is 'st0'. Tape access will
be via /dev/st0? and /dev/nst0? (see st(4). Most people link /dev/tape
to the norewind device (cd /dev; ln -s sht0 tape).

thats pretty fast, if i may say so. I think only 10k rpm drives will
reach up to that level.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had to get a new card for my PC as it got zapped by a lightning storm
this past week. My original card was a Linksys LNE100TX - EtherFast
10/100 PCI Lan card that has worked wonderfully for my cable modem. It
was a version 2.0.

I went to purchase another Linksys LNE100TX which is now at version 4.
When I rebooted the PC after installing it, Linux won't find the card
on bootup. I looked in the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf file and it lists a
card there, but it doesn't say it's a Linksys card or a DEC Tulip chip
card which the Linksys card is.

I've tried running kudzu to setup the card, but it won't ask me any
questions about it. It just identifies it as a PCI Network card. I've
renamed the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf and ran kudzu and the only PNP device
it found was my CD Writer (or at least, it was the only thing it asked
me about). It had identified all my other PCI devices, including the
network card, except it has it listed as unknown. If I remember, it
used to say DEC Tulip chip or something like that. Or, I could wrong on
that count.

I have the tulip driver compiled into my kernel. Under my LILO
configuration, I have the boot-up commands set to identify eth0 at IRG
9, I/O 0x6800 which is what it's at (even under Windows 98).

But, when Linux boots up, it never shows it initializing the tulip
driver at all. I see my other network card (an SMC Ultra) being found
and initialized. But, there are no messages (error or non-error)
showing it found my Linksys card.

The link light on the back of the card is lit, so the card appears to
be functioning. Under Windows 98, it is found and initialized. So, it
works there.

When Linux attempts to bring up the network, eth0 fails (since it
can't find the card) but eth1 is fine and comes up (it's for my
internal network outside of the internet).

What can I do to make Linux find the card? As I said, I've used this
card before with no problems, except my previous card was version 2 and
the new card is version 4.

Thanks for any help in this matter.

box the tape drive is always seen.

How can I get this one linux box to see the tape drive? I am using an
adaptec 2930 SCSI card. Kernel version is 2.2.12-20.

Thanks for any help,

Andrew

I have to admit, it looked a bit fast for me too. However, most people
report values in the range 15-20 with UDMA4, so it's probably not that much
off. I am using hdparm -u1 -c3 -m16, the drive uses UDMA4 by default(2.4.0-
test5 kernel), and the system is AMD K6-2 550, with offboard Abit Hotrod 66
controller, and a quantum lct10 10G drive, plus 192M of RAM on 100MHz FSB.
The chipset is Ali Aladdin V. The hdparm -tT speed has increased a little
with every major upgrade to the computer. I started out with the standard
MDK 2.2.14 kernel and 32M RAM (and a K6-2 333, this resulted in 11.5MB/s)
and have later upgraded most vital parts of the system.

Has anyone else seen similar throughputs with 5400 rpm drives?
