It's one of that crappy GDI-Printers that use a proprietary protocol so
you need special drivers that only exist for Windows. It won't work with
any other OS.

Get a used PC just for printing. My previous box, a 200mhz pentium w/ 64M
ram got that task. I'd have trouble selling it for $150.

The flow of data is as follows:

linux ps queue -> samba -> windows box.

windows ps printqueue -> gsprint (by way of redmon)
gsprint spawn ghostscript and uses the default printer (my lexmark
3200) -> lexmark 3200 print queue.

It works well for anything but photos. Unfortuneately, the windows print
spool is unbelievably slow. It takes 2 1/2 hours to spool up a 50M job.
It isn't samba that's at fault as I also tried using an lpr daemon on
the windows box. It received the 50M file in about 5 seconds and then needed
several hours to spool the file.

For photo's, I fire up a graphics viewer on the windows box, have it read
the jpeg in the "network neighborhood" (via samba) and have it print the
photo.

Looks like it fails detecting the drives on your Promise controller. THis
is the exact same problem I had with my HotRod 66 controller card - which
was fixed in the 2.4.0-test1 kernel.

You may want to monitor the changes being made to the kernel -
http://kt.linuxcare.com/kernel-traffic/. Other than that, your problem is
probably being addressed at the moment - I think there have been several
reports of similar problems with the Promise controllers.

Same thing happens occasionally to me with our Blackbox switch.

To fix, I usually have to either restart X or reboot the Blackbox.

This assumes, of course, that the mouse is configured correctly to begin
with (avoiding Intellimouse setting).

Identical problem as above with my Promise Ultra100 card.

I've tried to patch 2.2.16 kernel, no luck. Tried the 2.4.0-test6, still no
luck.

Unfortunately I'm not a lot of help. I can just throw out guesses here.
Can you boot with the HD not attached? What else do you have compiled in
the kernel? I had the same symptom, but tried with a stripped-down
kernel without a lot of fluff and it worked fine. I guess that something
else in the kernel is mucking with things. I didn't have time to
determine what it was.

I tired the pre-6 kernel and it wouldn't compile. The pre-5 gave one
error in the Promise driver, but the offending line simply needs to be
deleted.

there actually exist people who don't want to build everything by hand,

SCSI is more expensive, but has many advantages. Real OSes can make
very efficient use of SCSI devices, achieving better I/O throughput than
IDE with less CPU usage. Plus, you can have 6 devices using up only one
IRQ, which is very nice on IRQ-limited platforms like x86.

Do everybody a favor, and read the original question before criticizing
the answer.

In news:8mva5b$c5m$[EMAIL PROTECTED], we see that the goal here is to
serve web pages and e-mail.

You don't require a high-speed connection for this. 50-60 users
(whether on a LAN or remotely) will not saturate a 10M network for these
services.

Now, if the goal is to be an file server (NFS, Samba, etc.) then you'd
have a different story. File serving uses a lot more bandwidth than
e-mail and web browsing.

Unfortunately, if anyone is to answer this they will need more information.

Perhaps the most important piece of extra information is which desktop
environment you are using (probably either KDE or GNOME). It would
probably also be useful to know which Linux distribution you are using
(Redhat, SuSe, Mandrake, Debian, Corel, etc etc.)

I'm new to Linux, but just about to configure a setup like this for a cable

lucky enough to stumble upon this thread.

I've got a modern Realtek super-cheapo imitation-NE2000 10/100mbit 10-baseT
PCI card for my home LAN & have just bought 2nd-hand an apparently ancient
3Com Etherlink III ISA 3C509B which has the 10-base2 connector to fit the
cable modeem. Any idea which will install as eth0...? Is there any way to
force the ISA card to eth0..? Is that necessary...?

Many TIA,

SCSI tape drives generally work on Linux. Just hook it up and use it

Even people who can build by hand sometimes just want dumb
and simple, at least to start with.

For example, after many years of having a SCO machine as my
personal desktop, I'm about to switch to Linux (I've been
running a few Linux boxes here for a few years but they have
not been my main desktop).

I want as little work as possible when I do that.
Basically, I want to install the dist, configure it as
painlessly as possible and be up and running with 99%
functionality as quickly as possible. Lazy? You betcha.
I'm definitely going with something as user friendly as
possible, probably Caldera since they've bought SCO and I
expect some of the mannerisms I'm used to will find their
way into the product sooner rather than later.
