If you add "." to the user's path entry that should solve the problem.
But
beware that this makes it easier for you to execute trojan horse program
which
might be placed in the current directory. For example somebody could put
a
script named "ls" in the current directory. You might instead want to
execute
the program like this "./a.out".

Subject: Interesting modem problem
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 21:56:10 +0000

Hello,

I am a poorly student and own a budged K56flex ISA AMI-RA07 modem (I
*think* that it's Acer compatible). I live in the UK and my init string
might have to be different. The modem works under linux (SuSE 5.3), but
very, very slowly (ie 1 or 2 seconds for every character to come through
on minicom).

I have ruled out what I think are obvious setting errors (like 300 baud
max. transmission etc...), but I am still stuck! Under winblows, my
modem is registered as 'K56Flex ACF' so it can't be a WinModem.

Help

Please

Thanks in advance

Subject: Re: I don't want come back to Windows NT ...!
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 22:09:00 GMT

Dear Giuseppe Frangiamone,

First, be sure the drives are able to support Sync transfer & 40MB/sec
transfer rates. I would try changing the transfer to Async and give
that a try. I had that problem with my Zip100 drive. I would write a
file to it and the file would get corrupt ... espectially if it was a
BIG file. You have no idea how many times I downloaded the
kernel-2.2.1 source before finding this one!

Second, is this a problem that has just started happening with linux??
Or has it been all along? If it just started happening I would check
the drives for a possible impendant failure.

If it has happened since you installed Linux try my first suggestion.
NT and 95 and others default to Async for all drives unless you force
the issue.

If you are able to backup your information... you can try a media
check under the SCSI device tools or something for the SCSI card. Its
the other option after pressing <ctrl>-A that comes up. The first
line is for configureing the adapter and devices and the second takes
you to tools as in lowlevel formatting and Media-Checking of the
drives. BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANY OF THESE!!!!

Good Luck
James Kosin

Hi Chris,
Autoprobe won't succeed with this card. You need to supply ...
aha152x=0x340,11,7,1
... presuming they are the correct address etc. for your
configuration.

Subject: Need help with SB pci128

Hi All,

I'm having problems getting linux (kernel 2.0.36) to initialize
the sound card which is a Creative labs SB PCI 128. In the
documentaion for the sound card I can't find a single reference
to DMA values, IRQ values or anything like that. During booting
I see the message:
Sound Initialization started
Sound Initialization complete
The debug file /dev/sndstat is included at the end of this message.
The sound card is working perfectly with NT 4.0 on the same
machine. The reason the card config says "Ensoniq" is because
I specified this in the kernel config. Specifying a card type
"SB" has exactly the same result. Anyone got any ideas what
I could try ?
Thanks

I don't think that imm is a successor of ppa, but it's the module to use
whith a ZipPlus drive.
The ZipPlus combines a parallel and scsi port on one interface.
With imm a ZipPlus drive will show up as sd?? device. What I don't know is
whether it's possible to use imm with
standard parallel port Zip drives.
And by the way imm is a seperate package and not part of the kernel.

best luck,
Jo

The exact output from setserial /dev/ttyS2 -a is:
   Line 2, UART 16550A, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4, Baud base 115200, close
delay 50, divisor 0, closing_wait 3000, closing_wait 2 inifinite

Nothing abnormal there (in terms of port/irq) I think.

Thanks anyway,

Looks like you didn't read the message of Tobias thoroughly. He wrote,
that his script beeps happily if run at the console or a terminal but
not within a cron job. The reason why it's not beeping is that cron is a
daemon and thus, any job run by cron runs (like cron itself) without a
controlling terminal. Therefore, any data written to stdout or stderr
goes to nirvana.

probably because Red Hat 5.2 was produced
since Adaptec finally started supporting linux -
Debian 2.0 was developed earlier. note that the U2W version
of the card is new, and even RH say that it may or may
not work in their hardware compatability list (yes these
things do exist --
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/intel/rh52-hardware-intel-6.html)
when manufacturers introduce new hardware the programming
required typically changes. part of the hardware cost is
presumably going in writing the Winxx drivers. if the correct
device drivers are not available then no banana will be forthcoming.

this is for the stock RH kernel which I think has no
SCSI drivers compiled in.

we get the drivers for the SCSI card from the RAMDISK and aha, here it
is...

> Feb 8 15:20:25 localhost kernel: (scsi0) <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra2 SCSI host
> adapter> found at PCI 12/0
> Feb 8 15:20:25 localhost kernel: (scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 32/255
> SCBs
> Feb 8 15:20:25 localhost kernel: (scsi0) Downloading sequencer code... 407

more irrelevant stuff dropped.

Other SCSI controllers have been supported by the manufacturers
almost for ever -- had you read this NG 18 months ago you would
have seen plenty of rants about Adaptec stuff and how since
they would not release information on their cards the drivers
were having to be reverse engineered and consequently were
less reliable.

<rant> Before complaining, it is generally a good idea
to check whether the hardware you bought is supported.
Its an even better idea to check before you buy that the
hardware you want will be supported under whatever OSs
you want to run.....</rant>

btw, since you have a working system now whats the worry????
