It works wonderfully. The default kernel from a few distrobutions has SMP
enabled, but hey, you probably want to compile your own anyway. As to
"balancing", the kernel does it's job, it's the applications that you run
that may or may not be "balanced", so to speak. You don't need a new
release, but you probably want to make sure that you've upgraded to a 2.2.16
kernel.

Bear in mind that the memory usage reported by top and ps include the
graphics card's video ram. If you have something like a 64MB graphics card
on 64MB system you could get silly memory usage reports for X (running 3D
stuff on my voodoo3 I've been told I have two apps using 54% of memory and
that's not including X ;).

But 875 is a tad big. 87.5 should it have been? That would seem about right
for a big card on a smallish system.

Subject: Asus A7V slow disk speed
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 23:28:02 GMT

I just upgraded from an AMD K6-2 400 w/FIC VA-503+ Motherboard to
a AMD Athlon 800 (Thunderbird) w/Asus A7V Socket A motherboard.

I am still using the same hard drives, but understand that the I/O
controller
has changed because the motherboard has changed. I've got the drives
connected using the high-density ribbon cable (80 pins?).

On the K6-2, I was getting between 10-12 MB/sec transfer rate with
hdparm -t with parameters hdparm -c3 -d1 -X34 /dev/hda and /dev/hdb.

I can DEFINETLY NOTICE the impact the hard drives are having on the
speed
of the system. Some things are slower, even though the computer is
2.5-3x faster.

Now, the best I can do with the same drives are 7 MB/sec if I'm lucky.
I cannot enable DMA at all. It resets the drive after a few seconds and
my
transfer rate goes back down to 3+ MB/sec. My current parameters are:
hdparm -u1 -c3 -m16 /dev/hda and /dev/hdb (which give me around 7
MB/sec).

I'm using RedHat 6.1

How can I get DMA enabled?

If I were to put these 2 drives on the built-in ATA-100 Promise
controller
connector, does Linux have drivers/modules for this controller?

I've had great success with my ATI cards in Linux... Everything from an old 3D
Xpression+ PC2TV to my Rage Fury Pro 128 have worked just fine, and the RFP128
kicks ass for Quake. ::grin::

Got my card for $115.... your mileage may vary.

Any non-winmodem will work just fine with Linux... Any SVGA monitor will work

Bernie:

In order from easiest to hardest:

You may have damaged your IDE cable when you swapped boards. If you haven't
tried it already, try swapping cables. Also make sure the power cables are
firmly plugged into the drives.

Next enter your BIOS setup and make sure you have DMA enabled for your
interfaces/drives. It'd be a good idea to check out all the settings while
you're in there. You may see a speed improvement there, as well.

Another thing, in a thread about a month ago, a fellow with a similar
problem to you solved his by flashing his BIOS with an update available from
his board manufacturer. Check Asus' site for an updated BIOS, and flash if
necessary. You may see your speed increases there as well.

Hope this helps.

If you have a dual boot machine then use Partition Magic to partition
and format the second disk. Then boot into Linux, Redhat 6.2 will
recognize the new drive without any trouble. You can then either edit
/etc/fstab to add the partitions or do it from linuxconf. Here is my
fstab, I added a second drive (45G IBM) last month. I partitioned it
into three partitions, /alt (3G to use for expertimental Linux
installations), /tools (15G for programs), and /user (25G for usere data
space).

/dev/hda1 /win98 vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw,uid=500,gid=500 0 0

It's not a Redhat question, it's an Xwindows question... Depends on which
