I feel almost insane asking this as I have a list as long as my arm of
problems that need sorting on my box, but I'm on a shoestring budget so
here goes.

I have a 56k Pace fax modem, for a Mac.  I can get/make a lead and get
the drivers to run it on the PC with windows, will it work with
Linux?????

If not what is the best modem to use, I see 3 com mentioned on the
hardware support/drivers page on linux.org. Is there a particular
model/make. Faxing is definately an issue. I don't know much about
voice mail but if there is a good solution I might make use it.

that will allow me to hook up, CD-RW,ZIP, scanner, and possble and
internal HD that will work with Linux (Red Hat 5.2) with little/so

I haven't done this, but I hope to. It does have an analog input, and
I would presume it to be of high quality relative to the "mass market"
cards like the sound blasters, since the output stage is of higher
quality. ("Sound blaster" -- even the name is lo-fi.) That's all I
know, sorry.  Anyone else?

Yes, but at the disk controller level, not at the filesystem level.

Sure - if you want to give up locality.

The authors of the IEEE Computer paper give references as to how log based
filesystems are okay for write locality, but tend to have worse read locality.

Restructuring read mainly blocks for read locality is a win.

I don't think that logfs restructures for read locality. Do the others?

The advantage of log structured filesystems, as opposed to doing it in the
controller, is that you don't have to make a hard decision how much space
to dedicate to the log buffer.

Date: 18 Feb 1999 00:12:19 GMT

That's the exact same make/model I have in front of me as I write this
[but, being a computer supplied by where I work, I'm currently working in
windows]. The AGP card is an OEM variant of the STB Velocity 128 (riva
chipset, I believe) The cheapbytes redhat 5.2 worked like a charm setting
it up for X, but with the minor annoyance of white "static" when moving
windows in X.

Unfortunately, "even though" it is a "name-ish" brand
(Dell/Compaq/Gateway), more often than not what you get is whatever the
manufacturer could "put together" that week -- we ordered something like 30
identical units for where we work, but not wanting to "swamp" the guy doing
the installation, we asked that they ship a few each week -- you guessed
it, the first week we got 233's w/4gig drives; next week the 233's were
"obsolete", so for no increase in price the new CPU's were 266's; oh, and I
hope you don't mind, but we've sent 8gig drives instead of 4gig drives and
still didn't change the price... [the lucky people who waited until the
LAST computers arrived got 300mhz machines because the 266's were
"obsolete" -- talk about a busy MONTH!]

As to video under X, I'm getting at least 1024x768 -- my eyes really can't
handle 1280x1024, no matter WHICH OS I use...

I'm looking for the dip-switch settings for a Transitional Technologies Inc
CTS-8510 8 mm external SCSI tape drive. Does anyone know the switch
settings, or better yet have a manual for it? I checked the TTI home page
(www.ttech.com), but they don't have anything. The Exabyte site has a
world of information on their products, but the the third-party external
versions like this. The switch is a 12-bit dip switch that among other
things sets SCSI ID and emulation mode. It has no markings.

This is not really Linux-specific, but I figured Linux users might be more
likely to use a workstation-grade drive like this.

Subject: How do I update the lilo kernel image map on my boot floppy?
Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 12:16:08 -0500

I have a new kernel, but I have to use a boot disk at the moment, due to a
bios limitation on this 486. This is RH5.2, and I'm trying to get the boot
disk to load the 2.2.1 kernel I just built.

I have the 2.2.1 image copied over there, and I updated the lilo.conf on the
floppy's /etc dir, how do I run lilo to update on the floppy, not the hard
drive??

In the floppy root, (/mnt/floppy) I have:

vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7        vmlinuz-2.2.1
/boot
    boot.0200    boot.b    map    message
                (what exactly is the map file?)
/dev
    fd0    hda6
/etc
    lilo.conf

lilo.conf reads:
===============================================
boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
prompt
image=/vmlinuz-2.2.1
    label=linux
    append="mem=20M"
    root=/dev/hda6
image=/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
    label=linux-old
    append="mem=20M"
    root=/dev/hda6
image=/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
    label=rescue
    append="load_ramdisk=2 prompr_ramdisk=1"
    root=/dev/fd0

However, the only choices at boot time are linux and rescue, which means my
experiments with the various lilo switches have been unsuccssful. Help?

Hi,
can anybody help us poor unix types venturing into linux ?

We want to use caldera open Linux 1.3 as a remote X server for SGI IRIX systems.

The xterms we see are all in black and white, even locally
Hardware is a S3VirgeDX video card with XF86_SVGA X server (the recommended one)
The rest of the box is a 300Mhz Celeron with 128 MB ram.

So far the best X server is labtam's xwinpro running on NT !

But isnt this missing the real point? Either the Winmodem
or Winprinter require relatively accurate delivery of data
because they have to be sent instructions at exactly the right
time. This is a problem for a pre-emptive multi-tasking system
(unless you want to have some kind of "super" driver that
can grab system resources and not give them up to _anything_
else) Sure - its a superficially attractive thing given the
power of todays CPUs and the small cost saving, but if it
means X stops working any time you print why not just get a
Mac?

i assume you're talking about a jis keyboard. there's no point in
buying one of these.

most japanese use a modified qwerty board. various applications --
editors, browsers, etc -- sometimes with the help of something like
kon or kterm, send the typing to a kanji server which will turn it
into chan-to-shita-nihongo. on a jis keyboard, the ' key is shift-7,
the parantheses are shift 8 & 9 rather than 9 & 0, and there are a
number of other differences. the alphabetical characters are all in
the same place that us-ascii boards have them, though. (i have one of
these things myself. it drove me nuts because even if i write in
japanese quite often, i learned to type on an ascii keyboard.)
fortunately, you can easily remap your keys to the jis layout. check
out man loadkeys. note that most people touch type in romaji rather
than kana. most people find this to be faster than entering kana
directly. most people -- not all. but if you touch type already,
this is no doubt the best way to go. i'm not even sure if you can use
those funky keys like "koho" and "zenkoho" on linux, but then, i don't
really need them.

if you're just learning, you should be writing everything out by hand.
using a wa-puro will hinder more than help at this stage. anyway,
yes, it would be. it depends on what setup you use, but in xemacs
with canna, i just hit control-\ to go back and forth.

again, there's really no point in doing this, because you get kanji
through software, not hardware, and it's much cheaper and easier to
simply reconfigure your keyboard mappings. you might as well use the
board you already have.

I have been trying to install a 12GB Quantum for months and months,
but it simply won't do it.

Remember that your boot partition MUST be in <8GB area (the
age old 1024 cylinder limit in the PC BIOS) in order to boot properly,
but as far as installing the 12GB disk goes, I am beginning to think that
it just isn't possible. My disk simply shuts the drive down, or else it
keeps it running endlessly. I boot Linux off a UDMA 8GB disk on the primary
controller no probs, but just try using the 12GB on the secondary controller
(as the master drive) and it dies... I also tried making it a slave on the
primary controller and the same thing happens.

I wonder, perhaps anyone out there can answer this, if there isn't some
advanced power management on the BigFoot series that Linux simply cannot
control, or doesn't contorl. My other thought is that perhaps this drive
pushes the UDMA envelope past what normal controller can handle? This drive
operates at 66MB/sec and if memory serves me correctly, there is a 33MB/sec
speed as well as a 66MB/sec. Maybe the motherboard on my machine doesn't
handle this speed?

Well, that's my own experience and my own thoughts. I haven't really answered
the question, but maybe this adds more info on the road to getting this
problem solved.
