Hi Trent!
Thanks for the response! I'm planning on using the board in a server so
graphics display ability is not really an issue - it will be part of a cluster
and only need the console for boot up and diagnostics, no real display. From
what I understand, the HE is designed for mid to high end servers and the LE for
the low to mid range servers... I'll be getting about 10 of these beasts and I
doubt if the HE (with Xeon processors) would be really cost effective...

Lilo probably can't find your kernel - have you moved the kernel image
without rerunning lilo? If not, have you placed the /boot partition above
the 1024th cylinder on your hard drive?

You probably forgot to update the MBR accoording to your new
installation : lilo starts but cannot find a valid image at the physical
address on the disk where it expects to find it.
Reboot from a floppy and at prompt, simply type 'lilo' and reboot
afterwards.
You *must* run lilo each time you change something in the kernel (or in
lilo.conf, of course).
For details about the meaning of 'L', 'LI', ... read the HOWTO.

Hi.

How do I get the CHS-values for a drive in LBA-mode?

I have the CHS-values printed on the label of the harddisc:
    CHS=16383,16,63

which is the "physical geometry", doesn't it?

But how to get the "logical geometry"?

Greetings,

Is the CD drive detected as an IDE drive? If so you need to disable
IDECD.

Actualy this ought to be disabled in the redhat standard kernel, as not
doing this makes the scsi emulation code useless. I would call that a
bug in Redhat's standard kernel configuration, which they realy should
get fixed. Anyone care to complain to bugzilla?

My new Ensoniq AudioPCI is a ct4810 (label on the card, but on box it
shows ct4811). I just swapped an "old" Ensoniq card which used to work
with es1371, it had the same problem on this machine, i.e. xmms plays
too fast (still makes sound though)! During the bootup, it displays
something like "Intel PCI sound device found: 8086|2415", "not able to
use it".

So it is clear that the problem is with my new machine, which also has a
built-in sound card that Linux is not able to use.

Hi,

ich hatte vor einiger Zeit bei einem 12" DSTN-Display

Lass mal wieder davon hren.

Hi,

LBA mapping:

1. LBA Uses 255 heads

2. multiply your CHS-Mapped cylinders with your heads and divide it through
255 heads (16383 * 16 / 255 = 1027,xxx)

3. Your new mapping is 1027/255/63

4. you will lose some MB with the LBA mapping

crw------- 1 user root 14, 1 Apr 30 1999 sequencer

I would like it to be rw for all users so anyone can

I have a Supra Express 56i internal ISA modem which works under Mandrake
7.1. I had to set jumpers for the desired COM port and IRQ, but other than
that, no problems at all. It is a hardware modem, but I believe Diamond also
made some winmodem versions as well. The website does not show this, though.
I think that if it is a PCI modem, it is probably a winmodem.

What does dmesg says?
What's your lilo.conf?

I think the standard 62 kernel should be ok, just need to add stuff in
lilo.conf.

If ide-cd was a module you could make it work without touching
lilo.conf.
Next redhat releases will use ide-cd as module, I think.

They are right in not supporting a recompiled kernel.
You should re-install their kernel and tell them "I've your standard
kernel installed, please tell me how to make my ide cdrw work"

i upgraded my old diamond stealth 3d 2000 (based on the S3 virge) to a
voodoo3 2000 pci last year. the S3V was so broken that my SMP ppro
box could not run X (i had moved the card from an older machine where
at least it didn't crash). the newer video card fixed that. while S3
virge were actively being sold, there were no end of problems with
them reported to comp.os.linux.x. imho the S3V sucks. avoid S3 virge
at all costs.

the voodoo3 will be faster, on the screen. you can use opaque
movement &c. also you have 16MB (or more) of video memory which lets
you use 32 bit per pixel mode. the much higher dot-clock will let you
use high resolution and faster screen frame rates.

but that said, i don't know if it'd be worth it. modern machines have
had AGP video for the past couple of years. thus PCI video is
basically a dead-end. if you plan on upgrading that p200 any time
soon, i'd just suffer with the S3V and get something good in AGP when
the new box comes.

I've had zip luck getting an old Dexxa 2-button (model#M-M27) mouse to
work with my RH 6.1 install. The motherboard doesn't have a PS/2 port
so I can't try one of my other mice. (and the ps/2->9-pin adapter
doesn't seem to work) I've hit the MAN and HOWTO pages, searched the
web, etc. and I am stuck.

I've tried every combination of mouse type in mouseconfig with no joy.
I never get mouse action in X. According to the install, it
recognizes ttys0 and has it on IRQ4, so *possibly* the port is live
and functioning properly. The CMOS is set to Com1/3F8.

I used to use this mouse/mobo combination, but enough time has
transpired that I am uncertain of either. Is there any simple Linux
or DOS prog that I can run which simply reports the presence/absence
of the port and/or mouse? Right now, I'm sort of stuck as to knowing
what direction to take here.

Any suggestions/guidance/urls graciously accepted...

It sounds like the BIOS is doing some kind of power management without
Linux knowing it is happenning, so when the linux kernel tries to use a
device (like the disk) it finds it doesn't response because it's in power
saving mode.

If you want power saving features you will need the power management
code in the Linux kernel (it's a kernel compile time option). How you tell
if a pre-packaged kernel has this option turned on is, I think, distribution
specific.

So options I can see are:

1. Get a kernel with power saving (APM) enabled for your distro.
2. Get the kernel source and compile it yourself (with APM on)
3. Turn APM off in the BIOS (and remeber to shutdown PC when not in use).

If anyone could share his experiences about his SCSI RAID controller, I'd

Last time I looked, all RAID solutions from Adaptec were unsupported by
