That only works if your printer speaks PostScript. Mine (a Lexmark Optra
Color 40) does, but most don't. The Z31 in the subject line doesn't even
grok PCL, let alone PostScript...it is of that evil breed of devices known
as WinHardware.

There is some (limited?) support for some of Lexmark's more recent inkjet
printers in Ghostscript, though the better approach would be to avoid
printers that don't at least understand PCL. (PostScript in the printer is
definitely nice to have, but unless you stumbled into buy.com's (or someone
else's) closeout of Optra Color 40s or find someone with, say, an Apple
LaserWriter Plus (or another similarly-old PostScript laser printer) for
sale cheap, you're going to end up paying through the nose for PostScript.

well mines is an ELSA Erazor x2 GeForce chipset) and i tried
to use the SVGA of the X server on TurboLinux 6.0 release. i chose
all possible resolutions and the video test mode bombed on all of them.
Im not sure that TL has "generic geforce" but i will check. anyway, my mobo
took a dump. i dont know if it was because of the 10th attempt at installing
this OS or what but it just took a dump.

After rebooting, my /proc/asound/sndstat shows:

Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.7 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux kotao.localdomain 2.2.12-20 #1 Wed Mar 29 10:56:08 PST

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
VIA 82C686A at 0xdc00, irq 11

Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices:
0: MPU-401 (UART)

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: 0x49434511 ICE

Note that I have commands in my rc.local which set the mixer:
    amixer set Master 50% unmute
    amixer set CD 100% unmute
    amixer set PCM 100% unmute
I suspect that your Mixer setting will be enabled when you execute the
amixer commands. Then when I run xanim and play the IBM commercial where
they announce their support for Linux, the contents of
/proc/asound/sndstat change to show:

Audio devices:
0: VIA 82C686A (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Do a search for a boot loader, like Boot Magic.

I've not used Best Linux, however.

Writing a CD is not quite the same as writing to a normal disk. You need
to assemble the whole image in advance (using mkisofsand then use cdrecord
to lay the image down on a blank CD. You should look at one of the FAQ's
on CD recording (available at places like www.linux.org). I don't have a
lot of knowledge of BRU, but it is not likely you will be able to use it
directly. It is really intended more for tape or similar media.

What I do for backups is to tar the areas in question, make a CD image
(using mkisofs) and then write it to the blank CD (using cdrecord). This
might be done by piping one step to the next (you may find this
impractical since it may consume all the swap and choke), but likely will
use a lot of disk.

If you are using the Adaptec software to "format" the CD I suspect you are
not going to make much headway. The Adaptec software will make an ISOFS
disk, bot only at the end when you go to finish the disk off and provided
you tell it to make a transportable version. I believe this writes an
isofs type directory on a disk with a proprietary Adaptec directory hidden
away on it.

I have previously had both Linux and Windows installed in a dual-boot
configuration. During these times I have simply used Windows to do my
CD burning. I have now gone over exclusively to Linux. (My current
installation is RedHat 6.2.) I am trying to figure out what I need to
do to set up and use my CD burner under linux. It is an HP 7510e. This
is an external, parallel port burner. I gather that it has its own
SCSI host adapter or something built into it, because it mentioned such
things, and ASPI under Windows. Can anyone provide me information on
configuring it and getting up and running?

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm not at all an expert in CD-ROM stuff, but could it be that, since it
seems not to be the latest computer model you use, the CD-ROM drive
which is built in is not really an ATAPI-Interface device but contains a
vendor specific, proprietary interface which needs specific drivers (as
it is often the case with very old CD-ROM drives) ? Maybe it helps if
you post what kind of model your CD-ROM is ?
As far as I know there are some Kernel options to turn on the support
for some proprietary CD-drives, maybe have a look there. There is also
some information about proprietary CD-drives in chapter 3.3 of the
CD-ROM howto.

Hope this helps

Subject: OnStream IDE Tape drive cannot read its backups
Date: Fri, 01 Sep 2000 22:05:16 +0000

Hello all,
I've installed an OnStream DI30 IDE-ATAPI tape drive on a Mandrake
linux system. I have the 2.2.15 kernel and the appropriate ide_tape
patch for it. At first it seemed to be working fine, but on inspection
of the backups (using the good old tar commands 'tar -b 64 -cf /dev/ht0
*' to backup and 'tar -b 64 -tf /dev/ht0' to read back) I find that the
backup can only be partially read back from the tape. I have two tapes
out of a count of six that work, the remaining 4 will fail with read
errors and complaints about a blank or bad block on the tape. These
tapes are new, so it seems unlikely that they are all bad, especially as
they were bought in 2 sets of three.

Has anyone successfully used this tape drive, and have you used it with
tar?

Thanks

You can use LILO - which means the computer actually boots LILO and offers a
choice of operating systems. One is the default - but you have a
predetermined time to chose another.

Redhat loads LILO pretty well as a default, but I know nothing about
BestLinux.

Can anyone help?

I have successfully installed Madrake Linux 7.1 on my new PC and have had
one major problem relating to the Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics card.

The X config file states that it has auto-detected a generic Nvidia Geforce

machine doesn't crash and when I break out of X back to the character prompt
the display is STILL in a mess, and I have to guess that I've typed "halt"!!

If anybody knows what the problem is (is this card as yet unsupported??) or
where I can get the right driver(s) etc. I'd be most grateful,

I _suppose_ that I2O _arguably_ represents the way for Intel to head
"upmarket" by introducing functionality traditionally associated with
mainframes to "Pee-Cee" hardware.

It's "arguable" because it doesn't seem to have taken the world by
storm.

--> "Pee Cee hardware" is associated with being "cheap;" that
generally leads to things like using enormous but slow IDE drives,
and trying to share RAM with the video board.

--> Drivers are needed, and the purported merit of I2O was that it
would make for "portable, tuned" device drivers.

Unfortunately, NDAs discourage participation amongst the free
software community, and the "deaths" of so many Unixes in the wake
of the oncoming IA-64 "train wreck" has not led to there being a
"juggernaut" of I2O drivers demolishing all alternatives.

There's a _potential_ for Intel to do very well on this, but it looks
like they've squandered a whole lot of potential.

Maybe there is a vast IA-64 juggernaut about to hit us; with the
reports of upcoming "Pentium 4's" with _HUGE_ heat sinks and of IA-64
boxes with immense heating capabilities, this does not appear to bode
very well.

It just doesn't look like Intel has stuff that is as readily scaled
for Heavy Duty Processing as the stuff that Sun sells.
