If you want a free graphical interface for choosing with OS to load

Be sure to *not* have the 33,8Gb limitation jumper on the drive!!
THats meant for OS-es that cant cope with larger drivers, and restricts
the size at hardwarelevel to 33,8 Gb....

Date: Tue, 05 Sep 2000 18:37:48 GMT
Hi,
I am interested in collaborating with people
to bring about a Linux-based portable computer
kit. I don't want a palmtop but rather something
larger like a slate or a small laptop. This
project is supposed to be fun, without any
interest in making money. (It is very hard to
make money off of hardware anyway!).
This project is for all of us who would rather
make a new machine rather than modify something
that some company made and who would rather
*take part* in the design process than stand
idly by, waiting for something exciting. This is
a good idea I think and it is after all the
sentiment of Linux itself. The hardware designs
produced would naturally be GPL'd i.e. made free.
The design will be free, board designs will be
free, software will be free. All you will need
to be is buy parts, a generic case from Fry's
or Radio Shack, and build the thing.
I have set up a site with some ideas on it, at
http://linuxslate.tripod.com
Please feel free to visit it. I will add a
message board soon. Until then feel free to
post messages and ideas here or to respond via
email.
Thank you!

The Compaq and others Synaptics Touchpad
jumpy(horrible) mouse problem is not solved
in the 2.2.16 kernel. The Warren Delano
patch still can be applied to partially
fix the problem. Linux *is* usable on
these laptops running X, but it is a poor
system as the Mouse of all things does not
work properly. The kernel people know of
the problem and have for quite a while.
A fix has not happened yet.
I should fix it myself ;) I don't know the
first thing about re-writing kernels....

I am trying to use Partition magic on my drive in order to install Linux.
When I run PM it seems to be informing me that there is no space available
on drive C, although it is a 30Gig drive and I know I have at least 24
Gigabyte remaining.
On the GUI the drive is a plum colour, listed as "other" in the legend. I
believe that PM should allow me to use the window as a slider control to
adjust the sizes, but none of this reacts when I try to use it. Also, all of
the drop down menus are greyed out.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Yes, I am using the special cable provided by APC. (This is different

I've tried two different cables and two different UPSs and neither worked.
If anyone has apcupsd running, please let me know!

Subject: PCI modem as serial port isn't registering with Linux
Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2000 14:30:26 -0500
Hi,
I've posted already about my modem problem. I think I have a motherboard
that won't allow Linux to configure the PCI modem correctly (Intel "Seattle"
SE440BX for Pentium II). Anyone hear of problems with this board?
When I type
cat /proc/pci
I find the same irq and port that Windows uses (successfully) with my
3-COM/USR controller-based PCI modem (model 3CP5610A). I try to use those
same values in a setserial command to initialize the modem but nothing
happens. Linux just returns a prompt.
I have come up with some diagnostic data. I seem to have two serial ports
but the PCI modem as serial port isn't registering with Linux. Why? The
00:0e.0 address that lspci lists for the modem looks strange. Is it o.k. or
not? Maybe someone can help me deduce what these Linux messages mean.

Well, the first models of the IA-64 are on beta/alpha testings, as well as
M$ systems for them, so it will not be long, I believe.
Sun is better then Pee-Cee. It's a fact, but:
a) Part of the Sparc/Sparc ultra machines today include IDE drives, and ATI
video card, which reduces their price, but also decrease their performance.
b) Sparc, whatever Sparc you can think off, is yet very expensive. I'm
talking about Ultra and Netra, where their price can exceed the 10K$, 20K$
or even the 30K$, depands upon their configuration.
Both Intel and AMD should stick to the home-office computers, and leave the
servers to the real tough computers, since they will never reach the Sun
stability and power.
My oppinion.

Use cdrecord. See the man page for details. In general, should be
something like:
cdrecord speed=x dev=device# yourimage.iso
To find out the device# use (as root):
cdrecord -scanbus

The site indicates if your modem will work (green) or not (red) with

You need to exec:

lspci -v

This will list "IRQ" and "I/O ports at". Yes the ec00 port address
is OK. Run "setserial" with the values from the above and "autoconfig"

I have a USR/3Com PCI modem and it worked fine after I put the proper

This is not a patch, you can use it without rebuilding your Kernel.
With this driver you no longer need an "rc.serial" file.
