Subject: Q: MB -- Abit KT7-RAID against Asus A7V
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 13:07:35 -0700
Hi there,
I'd like to ask share an information of people who have experience with
this two MBs.
I never used Abit motherboards before but heard from people that they
good.
I believe them, that KT7-RAID MB really good - it has all what I'd like
to have but
luck of any experience with Abit push me to drop this message in
newsgroup.
Before today I tried to stay with Asus and I never had any problem with
their
equipment. But till now they do not have Athlon (Thunderbird) MB which
had 6PCI
and did not had on board sound - sorry I am not normal customer and I
don't like
all-in-one solutions. I was looking for an option and could not find
better MB than
Abit KT7-RAID. By the way could anybody answer on Question "Is 1.5GB RAM
limitation
for KT133 chipset?" as MB manufactures offer MAX 1.5GB RAM for this
chipset.
Could somebody experienced in Servers offer another better solution
than these
two MB? I will happy to hear "what recommended and what is not
recommended and
why it is not recommended".
Any information will very appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Andrey

You should put it into /etc/conf.modules or /etc/modules.conf - depends on
kernel version.
Read man insmod/rmmod/modprobe for more info.

Subject: Unresolved Symbols (RH 6.2 on AMD T-bird on Abit KA-7 board)
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 21:04:27 -0400
I'm having problems properly compiling a kernel + modules for my RH 6.2
system, running on an AMD T-bird with an Abit KA-7 motherboard. Before
booting up for the first time, I had to recompile the kernel to prevent
it from attempting to turn off the nonexistant PIII identifier number
(which always resulted in a kernel panic). The only thing I changed in
the default kernel configuration was the Processor Type & Features menu
via 'make xconfig'. The machine now boots successfully, but is unable
to insmod any of the modules in /lib/modules. It first runs into a huge
sequence of depmod errors:
<Snip>
Sep 11 12:03:20 G22-71 rc.sysinit: Remounting root filesystem in
read-write mode succeeded
Sep 11 12:03:24 G22-71 depmod: depmod:

Sep 11 12:03:24 G22-71 depmod: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/fs/romfs.o
...
<Etc>
It does this for every module in /lib/modules. So naturally:
<Snip>
Sep 11 12:03:43 G22-71 autofs: autofs startup succeeded
Sep 11 12:03:43 G22-71 automount[382]: starting automounter version
3.1.4, path = /misc, maptype = file, mapname = /etc/auto.misc
Sep 11 12:03:43 G22-71 random: Initializing random number generator
succeeded
Sep 11 12:03:43 G22-71 insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/fs/autofs.o:
insmod autofs failed
Sep 11 12:03:43 G22-71 automount[382]: /misc: mount failed!
...
<Etc>
Interestingly enough, the system works fairly well, although anything
which requires the loading of a module (autofs, lockd, or sound) doesn't
work. Recompiling the modules doesn't appear to change anything, except
perhaps to generate more unusable modules.
Has anyone ever run into this problem before, or been able to
successfully install and test Linux on a system like mine? (AMD T-Bird
700MHz KA-7 board) If so, how was it corrected, or which distribution
did you use?
Thanks very much,

Lacking one more free PCI slot I'd some fun with that
card too. Mind I've not distribution, but here's what
I've got.
PnP support -- disabled in the kernel as well as in the
BIOS ( yup ). The upcoming 2.4 seems to have better support
but for now I cannot see any gain.
Used pnpdump to create /etc/isapnp.conf and edited it
and modules.conf looks like this ( irq 7 is being used
by my parallel port ) and isapnp is run in some startup
script of course.
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
My modules.dep ( only the sound related parts ) looks
like this ..
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/adlib_card.o: /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/sound.o \
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/opl3.o

Subject: Samsung SF5800p Multi-functional printer under linux?
Date: 12 Sep 2000 21:47:08 GMT
greetings,
I'd like to purchase a Samsung SF5800P multi-function printer, mainly for
its fax and laser printer capability. However, I wasn't able to find much
information about it on the web, other than those on the samsung-web site:
http://www.samsungcanada.com/products/offauto/SF5800.htm
It is stated that the Emulation for the printer is GDI.
Not even PCL5, unless it does support PCl but not being stated on the web.
So, I'm assuming that it won't work under linux since, as far as I know,
linux doesn't support GDI printer yet.
Can someone please confirm this? I'll really appreciate any insight
before I put my money down.
thanx in advance,

Okay, I worded that poorly. I guess that everytime you switch from
mounting a CDROM to burning a CDROM, you can unload the ide-cd driver
and load the ide-scsi driver. And then back again after you are finished
burning. But I guess I don't really understand why you would want to?
What is the ide-cd driver doing that the ide-scsi driver doesn't?

Obviously, if you are doing driver development, this is a good idea.

Umm... I don't have any lilo parameter. Nor do I have any conf.modules
parameters (for SCSI/IDE support). As far as I know, the lilo parameter
is only required if ide-cd is compiled into the kernel. I don't have it
compiled at all, either into the kernel or as a module. As far as I
know, the lilo parameter doesn't have anything to do with the sr driver,
which I do have compiled into my kernel. Believe me, I have spent quite
a few hours experimenting with ide-scsi, but there is definitely a lot
more for me to learn, especially about modules.

Hi there,
you need Hedric's patch and kernel 2.2 should support 132GB disks.
(If I am not mistaken. But file size limit is still 2GB)

Definitely a matter of opinion. Unless you are going to use SCSI for
other purposes, I personally would stick with a good quality IDE drive.
I have had good luck with the Plextor (Plexwriter 8/4/32A), and have not
noticed others complaining about it. Usually a good sign.

On the RH 6.2 CDROM. If you are loading packages using gnorpm, then look
in the Applications/Archiving section. Otherwise, if manually installing
packages, look in the RedHat/RPMS directory on the CDROM. While you are
at it, you will also need mkisofs (also on the CDROM), which creates the
CDROM images that will be burned into the CDRW.
Also, there is the GUI front end application to those called xcdroast,
although I don't use it so I can't comment on it. It does not appear to
be on the main Redhat CD, but instead on the "Applications" CD. Or just
search the web for it.

Does this mean you only typed 'make xconfig', changed the cpu and then
recompiled the kernel? Well, that is not enough, because the default
configuration _is not_ the configuration shipped with the RH linux. If
you want a usable kernel you must go through all points of the
configuration and adjust them to your system. If you also use modules,
make sure to do the 'make modules_install' after you compiled them.
btw, these 'unresolved symbols' also occur if you did not compile for
example autofs as module and the file is still in the modules
directory...
I hope I could help you

Until you add the line:
append="ide=0xeff1,0xefe7"
to your "lilo.conf" file. [This should probably go right after the line
"label=linux".]
And exec (as root):
/sbin/lilo
the only way you can boot is to type:
linux ide=0xeff1,0xefe7
at the LILO prompt.
You don't need to use the boot floppy.
