Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 11:23:14 -0700
Hi,
Our group is currently looking for an inexpensive, low-to-mid-line
Linux workstation. I happen to like VALinux, although I know they focus
on servers. Can anyone point me to any reviews of their workstations?
In particular, I like their mid-line 420 workstation. Also, can anyone
point me to a recent comparison of different intel-based workstations
that
run Linux?
Thanks in advance,
Kevin
P.S. If you reply by e-mail, please fix the e-mail address.

Hm. I did such things. It all depends on your RAM. For X you want 16M RAM
(or you have to do some special tweaking). If you have that, it works OK,
though you should not use too high-powered applications (netscape,
enlightenment, emacs). Many other things work quite OK with 8MB (inclusive
Perl, I would doubt MySQL). Ssh will be quite slow, but usable for simple
things.

Huh? I thought the 8086 has 20 address bits. The 286 and 386 certainly
have more. However, the support chip sets probably won't handle DRAM over
1M anyway.

Want to run Linux on a PC (HP Vectra) having dual P90's.
At the front end are there any obvious red flags you can offer me.
Stuff like "it is impossible by definition for Linux to support dual

easy to get such a box running - but is it unreasonably difficult?
Many thanks.

Subject: Massive "floating point exceptions"
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 17:42:07 GMT
On a pentium III (Katami) 500 MHz based pc there suddenly have
appeared massive software crashes with "floating point
exception". Already by booting the system there died 5 or 6 daemons
(e.g. nfsd, httpd, lpd), each one with the fault message "floating
point exception".
Basically, the computer is still booting, but is of no use. Almost
every X application crashes after a few actions, X itself often dies
only a few moments later with the fault message "signal 8" (floating
point exception again). Even bash also could be killed by a two-time
TAB (does anyone know, if the bash uses floating points somewhere? A
short scan through the code didn't bring anything to light)
The fact that confuses me mostly is that a MS Windows 98 installation
apparently runs without any impairment or problems.
No alterations were made on the pc before, neither hardware nor
software had been changed.
The processor fan is running well. I changed RAM without any positive
effect.
What makes me really doubtful is the following boot message:
Checking 386/387 coupling - OK, FPU using old IRQ 13 error reporting
I cannot remember this "using old ..." message in the past years at any
linux system. `cat /proc/cpuinfo` says
[...]
fpu ; yes
fpu_exception : no
[...]
One request: Could anyone with such a pentium III system by booting
his pc look after its 386/87 check. What does your pc say here? (If X
isn't started directly by booting the system, the boot messages could
be scrolled up before the first console switch with Shift-PgUp. Some
linux distributions store the boot messages in a file in /var/log.)
What says /proc/cpuinfo in such a system about fpu_exception?
One question: Did anyone made the experience that only a part of the
FPU dies although the processor still runs? Is there another
explanation that I am not able to see because of preconceived ideas or
a lack of wisdom? Why does the other OS still run?

Primary ATA100: IBM 30G (/dev/hde)

I can boot using floppy, passing boot parameters "ide1=0x9000,0x8802
ide2=0x9800,0x9402". However, LILO didn't work. It can install w/o error w/
the Linear parameter set, but when it boots, it stops at LI. If installed

Any hint what I should do?? I'm using 2.2.17 kernel.

The only external mp3 players I've used are the Rio300 and Rio500.
While there are no "blessed" drivers for either, the
reverse-engineered ones not only work superbly but offer
features the official ones do not - such as downloading files
*from* the Rio rather than just uploading them.
But if you still don't want to use a Rio, your best bet would be
to invest in a CD burner and find an mp3 CD player.

Is there any way I can get this adapter working? Alternatively, can

Mike,
I thought I should tell you that I had HUGE problems with getting my
Adaptec 2940 card to work with my HP Surestore tape drive, UNTIL I
gave up trying to use the kernel module and just compiled it into my
kernel. That was with an earlier version of kernel 2.2 to the one you
appear to be using.
I know that this is a different tape drive to the one you are using
and a different SCSI card, but the symptoms (driver not loaded at boot
time == tape desn't work, force loading of driver == tape works, but
get loads of errors) are the same.
My advice - recompile the kernel and include the driver as a
'monolithic' option.
Regards,
Barry Wilkes.

Eh? Pee-Cees with MCA are supported. Just because there is no booting
kernel on your favourite distribution CD doesn't mean it's not supported.
You may have problems with certain SCSI-controlers, yes, but MCA
as bus system is supported on PC-hardware (not on PPC).
Try those links (they once were working, unchecked):
http://www.dgmicro.com/mca/ (MCA Linux homepage)
http://members.aol.com/mcapage0/mcamafia.htm (THE MCA MAFIA)
http://chimera.acs.ttu.edu/~tapsa/mca/ (Linux on PS/2)
http://www.ghq.com/~jwhite/wilma/list.pl/lxi.913420016.19222.html (MCA Linux)
perhaps you'll find a working kernel or at least more info.

I am running a PIII 600MHz intel system with 256Meg RAM and Linux
2.2.14-5.0. REdhat Linux 6.2
The interesting thing is in gtop, the third bar along shows the swap
that is being used. When I run a very large job in Matlab the swap
get's allocated (according to the length of the bar). This is fine (I
guess), but when I exit Matlab, I would have expected the swap to be
released and therefore the length of the red bar go back down.
Am I wrong in my expectations? Is there a bug in the kernel, or is this
just a case of me not understanding what the swap bar represents.
Any insights would be appreciated.

You should use this:
append="mem=128M"
As your first line in the file /etc/lilo.conf
Then, type lilo (as root) and be sure it succeded.
Beware, if you have a mother board that uses shared memory for an "on board"
video adapter, you shoud reflect it at the mem= line.
For example, I use to own a 748MB with an SiS620 video adapter using 8MB of

Hi, does the Biostar M7VKB work in Linux?
I'm planning to build my own system.
I've sent an email to Biostar inquiring about this
and haven't gotten any responses.
My planned configuration for my system is at
http://geocities.com/jtnews_bellatlantic_net/
Any comments you have would also be welcome.
Please make sure that you send to my email address
directly too when you reply.
Thanks.

I have a Genius Wheel Mouse (I believe is almost the same) I set it up as a
Microsoft Intellimouse (or something like that) The wheel does not work,
but I can use it as a third button. If you can set the wheel to work...
please mail to me.
