Subject: USB device does not exist
Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2000 07:34:00 -0700
I'm trying to connect my Visor handheld to a linux box using the USB cradle.
I downloaded the 2.2.16 kernel, added the lastest USB backport patch, and
compiled- all OK.
I set up the USB code as modules which I loaded manually. I loaded usbcore,
uhci, and usb-serial. After this I found numerous messages in the kernel
logs, all of which seemed to indicate good things were happening.
I mounted /proc/bus/usb and found the expected files and directories
there -BTW I have no idea what this is for, but the How-TO said do it.
I then "mknod /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 c 188 0" to make my device. Note: I only
made 1, not all 16. I made sure I have permissions to this file - I did all
as root.
Finally, I tried to start a ppp daemon using /dev/usb/ttyUSB0. This never
got off the ground. Kernel logs showed "device does not exist". However,
when I put the Visor in the cradle and push the hotsync button, I get kernel
messages saying that the Visor is connected on ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1. After
about 2 minutes, I get additional messages saying the Visor disconnected.
It doesn't seem to matter whether I try to start pppd with or without the
Visor.
I believe it must be something stupid, but I don't know what to do next.
Thanks for any assistance.

I am also using the uniprint drivers with my Epson 600. There are three
which I use, the 360, the 720, and the 1440x720. You will probably also
notice you don't have enough green as well as red.
There is a gimp printer plugin which corrects this and will provide you with
another driver, std, if you have gs5.50. My gs is 5.1 so I didn't build the
driver, but printing with gimp and this plugin, the colors are correct and
the print quality is extremely good. The url is:

Hi everyone!
I have actually two problems and I hope one of you linux souls out
there will be able help me.
I bought a Comapaq system a while ago and it was really a pain to
install linux at all ( You get only two cd which automatically
partition your HD and install windows) But now that I have linux two
most important things do not work.
First of all I have an Lexmark 3200 printer and oh wonder Lexmark only
provides Win drivers. Does anyone know of a way to use this printer.
But the printer is not even the worst part. In this MS box I also have
a Rockwell HCF PCI modem. This kind of modem is also called a WinModem.
Is there anything I can do to use this piece of junk to connect to WWW.
appreciate any help

Have you changed anything in the hardware configuration, added a board
or moved a board to a different slot?, or any BIOS settings? You might
want to try toggling the Plug and Play OS setting in you BIOS and then
rebooting to see if either Linux or Windows sees new hardware.

Here are my findings for IDE DMA:
- AMD Irongate/VIA VT82C686 (Asus K7M motherboard):
DMA broken (Timeouts, lockups)
I'm not sure if this is a board or VIA chipset problem.
- Promise Ultra66 (20262 chip) with 80pin cable: DMA works!!!
The trick is to make sure you use an 80pin cable, even if you're only
using UDMA 33 drives. 40 pin cables cause lockups on the Promise controller!
I'm using kernel 2.2.16 with ide.2.2.16.all.20000825.patch.
Each system was torture tested for at least eight hours.
So, if you have a Promise controller, you can replace flakey onboard IDE
controllers.
Looks like I'm going to buy a few more Ultra66 boards!

Could this also be true for the HPT 366? i am having similar problems, with
DVD or CDrom mounting locking the system when connected to my HotRod 66
controller. However, this also applies when using an 80conductor (not
pins...) cable and the DVD-drive as a slave on the primary HotRod channel.
I haven't tried it as a master on the HotRod though...

Subject: Compaq Presario PCI Bus error under Linux (and Win98) -what happened??
From: Betsy Schwartz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 18 Sep 2000 10:15:33 -0400
My husband has a Compaq 5050 with 128M Ram. It is configured to boot Win98
from HD and linux from floppy (a recent version of redhat.)
He recently opened the box up and removed and reseated a RAM chip (just
checking what was there prior to buying a memory upgrade). This caused some
sort of change to the PCI setup. When he powered it back up, Linux started
to boot, complained that XYZ brand PCI bus hardware that was formerly installed
was now missing, and refused completely to continue booting from floppy.
Win98 came up, complained that there was different PCI hardware, ran
through a few iterations of the hardware wizard, and then booted fine. This
did not affect the linux boot. The system BIOS menu didn't have any
visible choices relating to PCI setup.
(I wasn't there so I do not have exact transcriptions of the error messages)
He finally got the system to boot by a complete re-install of linux, but I am
wondering what happened, and what to do if it happens again? What sort of
change to the PCI bus is *possible* on this machine? What sort of change
would make a linux boot floppy unbootable? I am assuming that the boot
floppy has a limited number of device files and something changed to make
it want a different device file, but what could have changed?
Has anyone experienced this and if so can you shed some light?
Also pointers to places to get compaq-specific clues welcome.
I do now have the Linux BootPrompt Howto which has a PCI section.
thanks for any clues,
Betsy
PS we bought this machine used so there is a small but nonzero possibility
that it doesn't have all original parts, if there are any model-specific
bugs.

I managed to get hold of a TV tuner card for 15 (~$25) and a little VGA to
TV box for another 20. This solution works admirably although I had to do a
little messing about to get the box working. I've since sold the box to
build up cash in order to buy a proper video card with TV out. I don't think
I've got the software anymore but I can check. It was a Creative TVcoder
external and while the picture was a little odd at times it did the job
fairly well.
The compression is not going to be adequate however. You are highly unlikely
to get a decent card with true hardware mpeg compression for small change
but it might be worth a look around.
Don't know if that helps

Not unless Microsoft have changed their tune recently. AFAIK you will have
presicely no luck finding anything of that nature. Last I heard Microsoft
were busy trying to forget that Linux even existed. Why do you want to read
them under NT anyway?
If its any help you can see the NT partition from Linux with a little
tweaking of the kernel.

Thank you much ...I went to the site and saw gimp-print 4.0a3 (Sept. 4,
2000)but nothing after that? That seems to be the most recent? Is that
correct or is there a more recent one?
I have Linux_Mandrake 7.0 on a 2nd HDD (hdb1) and its on a PC and not a
network. On windows the Epson is on LPT1 (I assume that the port in
Linux should be LPo)? My system is one I put together with a AMD K6-III
450 and a ASUS P5A Super 7 Motherboard. It does have a connection for
USB, actually two one of which I have my Keyboard hooked into one (I
also have the Keyboard plugged in with the round connector) ? I have
Windows 2000 on the HDa drive and have MSOffice 2000 there as well. The
2nd drive is dedicated entirely to Linux-Mandrake and is 3200 (3.2Gig).
My modem is a Zoom external and I do not know what else to tell you
about my system.
Please let me know how to d'ld the driver and where to put it as well as
how to install it so the printer works for all users (wife, daughters).
I am vaguely familiar with PCs but not a programmer!

You might be able to use the modem by now. A while ago there was a project
started called the linmodem project, it was attempting to write drivers for
winmodems so they could be used under linux. I don't know how far they've
got but you could have a look. It's at www.linmodems.org. The printer should
be configureable via the printtool in Red Hat. I don't remember what to do
in any other variant although I have seen and installed many (successfully).
If you can't see a Lexmark printer anywhere, which is quite possible, then
try one of the generic drivers. On a related note, didn't the install
process ask you whether you had a printer and where it was connected? It
usually does this so as to set up a spool for it. If not then you could be
in trouble. I'm sure someone here can help you out but if you haven't got
basic printer support set up then I'm afraid I'll be about as much use as a
chocolate teapot. I seem to recall its one of the services you are supposed
to set up when installing but I can't remember for sure.
Anyway, I can't think of anything else that might help so I'll shut up now.

Every commercial distribution provides this. You shouldn't be missing

Hellou all Linux Hardware Fan's :)
I own a old computer (don't exactly remember if it has the HX or the VX
chipset)
with Debian 2.2, kernel version 2.2.17 running. I want to buy a bigger
harddrive,
maybe the Maxtor 60GB and want to run it in this system, so I probably need
to
buy one of the available PCI IDE Controllers.
My question is, which of those should i choose ? The Abit HotRod or the
Promise Ultra (no RAID, just simple IDE) ? Does both of them properly work
with a generic kernel or do I need any patches ? How is the performance of
them ? Is the one faster than the other ? Is the first connected IDE drive
named "hda" as usual ? Are there config setting too (like hdparm) to
increase the performance ? Any experiences with using this hardware ??
Thanx for answers.
