Subject: 3rd mouse button??

ok i would like to know how to set up the third mouse button in linux
without having to reinstall. I selected the generic 3button ps2 mouse, but
i did not check off the emulate 3 buttons because i figured selecting the 3
button generic mouse would cover it. Is there a file or something i can go
into to edit and select that emulate three buttom mouse thing? I can't seem
to copy and paste. I tried the high lighting thing with the right mouse and
clicking the right and left mouse buttons to paste with no luck. Is there
any other way of doing this without a reinstall?
thnx in advance

According to:
http://www.pandi.hp.com/pandi-db/dds_data_sheet.show?p_model_no=C6409A&p_prod_type_id=6&p_model=DeskJet880C
it uses "HP PCL Level 3 enhanced". HP offers drivers for
Windows 3.1x, 9x, and NT 4.0, as well as Mac OS.
I've yet to find anyone who has tried using it on Linux though...
(though one kind soul told me it "should" work, I'd prefer to hear from
someone with some real-world experience)

I installed RH 5.1 on an AMD K6 with a DC390F, no problems whatsoever.
I don't have a scanner, though.

Sure, just go into /etc/X11/XF86Config and change (or uncomment) this
line:
# Emulate3Buttons is an option for 2-button Microsoft mice
# Emulate3Timeout is the timeout in milliseconds (default is 50ms)
# Emulate3Buttons <---<<< This one! :-)
# Emulate3Timeout 50

Hello...
I finally got diald to auto-magically dial into my ISP.
This is the plan...
1. The PPP connection MUST me started before the ISP starts a terminal
login sequence.
2. To do this the pppd-options line for the diald.conf file must
have the PAP login parms.
3. There must be a /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file.
4. Remove the login sequence from the CHAT script, let diald and pppd
do the rest.
STILL have NOT gotten a good work around for Netscape's *NEED* to have
a (dns helper), which will be 'stale' after the first PPP dynamic IP
address conversion. I guess a CRON job to start and stop Netscape for
'automatic' EMail...

I am in trouble with my Sager 9700. The touchpad is correctly identified as
PS/2 and at interrupt 12. But I got no cursor, even mouse-test cannot
recognize any button or movement on the pad. It works on windows but if I
try to load Windows after a reboot from Linux, it is not found anymore. I've
tried gpm -t ps2; mman,etc. I am currently using a serial mouse on COM1.

Hi Scott,
The Fireport 40 uses the NCR53C875 chipset which is supported under Linux. I
am using one on one of my machines, just select NCR53C8XX support when you
compile your new kernel. I have had some problems with it, probably due to
shortcomings in my setup, and have to include "ncr53c8xx=safe:y" in my
startup line to bring it up in safe mode. Haven't had time to find the real
problem and this seems to work okay. Hope this helps.

Wow, I must have glazed right over that one. Still, my first post
describes a solution to a common problem with this NIC. Hopefully,
though, this one error you pointed out will be the only problem the

Last I tried it, the i740 support for X was not very good (i.e., slow
as molasses). Good low-cost AGP cards I have found are the ATI Xpert
98 and ATI Rage IIc.

It is in the supported hardware list for that version. Use the SVGA

I have that same card and getting it running was a "no brainer".

Not until you have something like X running on it; considering it
stipulated that the relatively low resolutions of palmtop machines
cuts down on memory consumption, you're still left with a machine that
will be problematic to make *really* functional...

Subject: Disk Mirroring
Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 21:48:47 GMT
Howdy. Is there any way to set up disk mirroring or disk duplexing
under Linux without expensive RAID hardware? I just bought two 9gig
drives, and I'd like to mirror them for added fault tolerance. I
tried looking around for a HOWTO, but couldn't find anything in the
LDP.
If you could please reply via email I'd appreciate it. My news access
is a bit less than reliable :P

When i go to install Linux RedHat 5.2 I go to disk druid under
custom.When I start tp partition I enter ?boot 50 megs first,then i get
:There are currently unallocated partitions present in the list of
rtequested partition(s). The unallocated partition(s) are shown below:
1/boot5 not enough free space
Hdbb has 2014Megs

I formatted hdb which in control panel is D. I had this once before but
forgot what to do to correct this.
If I do a server or Workstation install it goes right to my C drive

Subject: USR modem 5687 - Will it work?
Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 17:50:47 -0600
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I seemed to have entered modem hell.
I bought a computer system from a local company that utilized a cheap
winmodem (I know, cheap and winmodem is redundant). Since I wanted to
install Linux on this system, I fully accepted the fact that I would
need to get a new modem.
Now, here is my problem...
Following advice I have gotten from other Linux users, I bought a 56K
Faxmodem at CompUSA. I made CERTAIN that it was NOT a winmodem. I
looked at the box and the picture of the card clearly showed little
jumpers on the card, which means to me that it is hardware configurable.
To my dismay, the actual card has no such jumpers. Everything is
software PnP. I figured I would just try to get it to work anyway. I
have spent > 10 hours on this, and have gotten to the point where
"isapnp" will report that it configured the USR modem at port 0x3f8, IRQ
4. I tried "wvdial" (ppp utility) and it just doesn't see it. I feel
like I am so close to getting it working, but I think I must be missing
something.
At one point, I became frusterated and called CompUSA and asked to
exchange for a different modem. Since the package was opened, they told
me they are going to stick me with a 15% restocking fee if I try to
return it, and they will only do an exchange for an item of equal or
greater value. I told them the modem pictured on the box is not what I
got... and they told me to look at the fine print. Lo and behold, the
message "Product contents may differ from photos shown." AAARRRGGG!!!
(I think very few people ever read EVERYTHING on the package before they
buy it)
At this point, I am very frusterated with CompUSA and 3COM/USR. Does
ANYONE know how to get this working?
thanks in advance...
-Rick

type this
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
then edit the file and make the necessary configurations for your modem.
there might be more then one device off in the file. under your modem just
pic the com port and the irq. then save it.
type
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
ok, now use setserial to configure your modem, go into windows and find what
address your modem port is on. it should be something like ( 0x02f8,or 2f8)
and what port it is. and what uart(probably 16550A) if possible then issue
these
setserial -v /dev/cua3 port 0x02f8 ( whatever port and whatever address)
setserial -v /dev/cua3 uart 16550A ( sets uart to port)
and there you go. you are set up.

Sure, install ALSA (alsa.jcu.cz), or upgrade to kernel 2.2.x...
the former worked for me.
