I've been trying to locate a memory module for a host of LEO DESIGNOTE 5500
laptops. Since the LEO isn't sold anymore, I can't go back to the original
vendor for a solution... Actually I can, but they say, "I dunno'"!

However... The DESIGNOTE takes a 144pin so-dimm and from what I can figure out
it's a fairly common module... But... there's such a huge disparity between
pricing from different vendors and atleast one hardware question that is
driving me insane.

Would ANYONE know if the so-dimm used in the APPLE IBOOK is the same as used in
"ordinary" laptops? I can score 64meg APPLE IBOOK so-dimms for as little as
$68.00 while a module for "ordinary" laptops run in the neighborhood of $80.00.

I'm not worried over a measly $12.00, but when we're talking a 100 or so
laptops... it can add up.

I would appreciate ANY and ALL comments, suggestions and help from anybody.

FWIW... I've been all over the net and no memory vendor has even an idea what a
LEO is. ;') It's made by NEC and is part of the BIRCH 1.0 production project.

Thank you, in advance.

I'm trying to select the components for a Linux firwall machine,
hopefully, in a slim 2U rackmount case. So, I'm looking for mobo's that
have a lot of on-board functionality.

I know that you can use boards with an Intel 810E chipset, but what about
the 815E chipset?

Also, all of the on-board LAN chips I'm seeing are the Intel 82559.
Is it possible to use this chip? Which driver would you use?

Thank you for any suggestions.

You'll have to install XFree 4.0.1 and NVidia's own closed-source Linux
drivers, tada, perfect 3D (almost) and great 2D with overlay acceleration
(for videos etc..)

I have in my /etc/X11/XF86Config the lines:

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "IMPS/2"
    Device "/dev/psaux"
    ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

I then also run a program that came with my Linux distro called
'imwheel'. This makes the wheel function as you'd expect (i.e. for
scrolling - don't know how I managed before without it! ;-) ). The mouse
it connected to the PS/2 port on my computer.

4.0beta, or a4, or whatever isn't really out yet as a formal release.
You should obtain the latest sources from the CVS repository, or just
wait a few days until the beta gets out the door.

There are CVS instructions on the project's sourceforge page.

I'm in the same boat and about to buy a KT7-RAID
if it'll work. I have a few questions though.
Which kernel are you running? Where did you get
the kernel patch? Can you only see the drives on
the controller afterward, or can you also use
striping? Any other comments would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey crew -

I need to have Advanced Configuration and Power Management (ACPI)
dissabled, as well as the older power management, Advanced Power
Management (APM). These both need to be inactive on my system, in order
for Real Time Linux (RTL) to work. If you don't know what I'm talking
about with RTL, it's not important.

So I have no power management configured into my kernel. I also have
power management dissabled in the bios. Yet my bios provided physical
RAM map looks like this:

BIOS-provided physical RAM map:
 e820: 000000000009f800 @ 0000000000000000 (usable)
 e820: 0000000000000800 @ 000000000009f800 (reserved)
 e820: 0000000000018800 @ 00000000000e7800 (reserved)
 e820: 0000000003ffdc00 @ 0000000000100000 (usable)
 e820: 0000000000001c00 @ 00000000040fdc00 (ACPI data)
 e820: 0000000000000400 @ 00000000040ff800 (ACPI NVS)
 e820: 0000000003f00400 @ 00000000040ffc00 (usable)
 e820: 0000000000018800 @ 00000000fffe7800 (reserved)

You'll notice 2 lines involve ACPI - and I can observe that some sort of
power management is indeed taking place. My cpu is a PII-450, and is
sitting in a Dell Dimension XPS Rxxx mobo. (In my case the xxx=450 or
the processor speed, I don't think that matters.) If anyone knows how I
can rid myself of those 2 ACPI lines, I'd be eternally grateful.

-Chuck

What is the output from:

It could be useful to se these outputs both from you machine and the

First International Computer

First International Computer, or FIC, manufacturers some laptops for
Texas Instruments (the TI Extensa CD-550), Everex (the ExpressNote),
and for NEC, including the NEC PC-9800 series. (These are not
IBM-compatible, but were the leading computer platform in Japan a few
years ago.) FIC is backed by the Formosa Plastics Group, which is the
largest conglomerate in Taiwan.

They also make the LEO DESIGNote notebook (Pentium 133/Multimidia
builtin/quad CD-ROM/ TFT screen) with interchangable CD-ROM and
Floppy drive, removable HD.

I have the same card too and I am still having trouble configuring it
properly. Although, it worked briefly on Caldera before my PC crashed,
which means that it works on Linux. This card uses a DEC Tulip chipset and
the driver can be obtained from www.scyld.com. Go to the network drivers
area and you will find all the info you need. Try installing it first with
the netdrivers.tgz package, and if that doesn't work try installing the
modules individually. You will know what I am saying after you go to the
site. Also, when using insmod, make sure you load pci-scan.o before you
load tulip.o, i.e. insmod pci-scan.o <enter> insmod tulip.o <enter>. lsmod
will show you what is loaded.

Good luck!

Stay away from the 810, big trouble, IMHO. The 815E's have been rock solid,
however, particularly the Asus CUSL2. The 82559 is the basis of some of the
EtherExpress Pro/100, I believe. At any rate, the eepro100 driver is
what you want.

I read a lot about this motherboard. But on one hand it is a good one,
on the other hand it does not work.

I need a bi-pentium motherboard (gimp, DVD, ...) and I want to be sure
of my choice.

100 MHz memory
ati rage fury

tekram 315
kodak dc290 on USB

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have not modified the kernel. It is a
standard Red Hat 6.1 install.

I added the 'alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx' to /etc/conf.modules
and re-booted but the system still can't see the SCSI tape drive.

/sbin/lsmod does not show either st.o or aic7xxx.o.

# /sbin/lsmod
Module Size Used by
3c59x 19112 1 (autoclean)
#

aic7xxx.o and st.o are present at /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/scsi/aic7xxx.o
and /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/scsi/st.o

Can't figure out why they are not being loaded.

Any additional info will be very helpful.

Thanks.
Harshal

Replace X and Y with the drive letter and number that the Lose9x
partition uses. Usually, XY is "a1". It would also be a good idea to
edit /etc/fstab with a text editor and make sure the following line is
in there:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat noauto,umask=000 0 0
