Well maybe this is a relly stupid answer but i have no idea.
I'll tell you what i do know.
Both modems i've tested are diamond's supra (usb and com).
If by <distro> you mean my linux distribution, then that would be the
latest version of red hat.
When trying to use the serial modem (the usb wouldn't be recognized at
all) i used that dial up program i found on the gnome desktop.
Sorry but i'm a real newbie :)

Thank you big time for the reply.

Subject: Problems w/ ide patch and Promise controller
Date: 14 Dec 2000 14:20:13 GMT

Hi folks,

I have a machine with two Promise Ultra66 controllers, running
four Maxtor 80 GB disks (one per IDE channel). I'm running kernel
version 2.2.16 with the ide patch (version 20000825). I'm having
problems getting all of the channels to use DMA. If I have both
Promise controllers installed, I find that, no matter what I do,
/dev/hdg has problems. Swapping disks, swapping cables, swapping slots and
swapping controllers makes no difference.

        If I do a "hdparm -d1 /dev/hdg" followed by "hdparm -t /dev/hdg",
I get errors of the form:

        hdg: timeout waiting for DMA
        ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout_func only: 14
        hdg: irq timeout: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
        .
        .
        .
        hdg: DMA disabled

The other channels (hde, hdi and hdk) work fine.

I've found that, under some circumstances, I can make make
hdg work if I only have a single Promise controller installed, but
it's not consistent, even with the same controller, disk, cable and slot.

My latest theory was that the power supply was just overloaded.
I tried unplugging all but one of the Maxtor drives, but I got the same
results.

So: Help! What's so special about hdg? Other possibly useful
information: the machine has an Intel PPro motherboard (it's a Gateway
p6-200) and (before you suggest) I've also tried:

        * removing all other PCI devices
        * using "pci=reverse" at boot time

Also, for what it's worth, I have another machine that's been successfully
running for a couple of months now with all the same hardware and
software, except that it has an Asus p2l97 motherboard instead of the Intel
board.

Thanks in advance for any help,
                                        Bryan

Except that many BIOSes refuse to support other drives than 0x80 and 0x81.
There is little help of the drive 0x82 if the LILO cannot use it through the
BIOS.

Obviously Mozilla is smart enough that it doesn't bother with the MIME
stuff when its sending plain text.

IF the message contains any MIME attachements, there will be IN THE
HEADER AREA, an line defining the boundary marker, which is usually a
fairly long string of randomly generated characters surrounded by a
fixed number of dashes.

IF this is defined, then when the reader software encounters it, it
reverts to the header read mode, reading the next line to find out what
sort of data the next section of text represents, and its name. It then
reads the base64'd data, decodes it and writes to the filename until it
hits the next copy of the trigger line.

ISTR the trigger line must be preceeded and followed by a blank line.

For all the claimants to this argument, there were NO mimed messages in
this thread as it arrived here. My reader, Amiga's THOR, can be
switched with the click of a button to show me the full, complete
message raw. Other newsreaders should be as versatile and complete.
Sadly, nothing I've looked at in the linux offerings even comes close.

Cheers, Gene

I have recently installed SuSE 7.0, had 6.3 before but reinstalled reather
than upgraded. Anyway I have a Hauppage WinTV card (BT878 IC - from memory)
with a radio tuner.

Problem is that the out of the box installation works fine for the TV part
of the card, but the radio section won't work, tried a few different progs
such as Ktuner etc.. The bttv module is now included in the kernel so the
supplied manual is already out of date. I have tried uncommenting and
modifying the
relevant sections in the module.conf script, but no luck.

Has anybody got a TV/Radio card working under SuSE 7.0? If so how did you do
it, and or what tuner s/ware are you using?

Thanks

Yep, that's what I read everywhere, but the card is still not recognized. I
used the ah152x.s file to create a bootdisk. Should I type extra parameters,
maybe? The card is not plu&play, and I used the default settings: I/O 0x340,
IRQ 11.

I was hoping maybe someone using the same card could tell me what he did to
get it to run.

My system:

  Matrox G400 DH AGP

  No IDE disks or cdroms

I've installed Slackware 7.0 kernel 2.2.13 w/ Alsa sound drivers
0.5.9a & kernel 2.2.17 (with included OSS/FREE).

Using kernel 2.2.13 & Alsa I had sound mostly working for about a week
using these modules

  snd-card-via686a 6908 0
  snd-pcm 28952 0 [snd-card-via686a]

"mostly" meaning aplay & play worked with .au's & .wav' & playmidi
looked like it was working but no sound came out. During this week I
performed several shutdowns; then on one startup the system locked up
tight while loading the snd-card-via686a module & it's done that ever
since, rebooting & power cycling hasn't helped. No messages, no
syslog, no ooops, no nada.

I installed kernel 2.2.17 with its OSS/FREE (downloaded from
kernel.org).  Still no sound;

  bash-2.03# insmod -v soundcore
  bash-2.03# insmod -v sound
  bash-2.03# insmod -v uart401
  bash-2.03# insmod -v sb irq=6 io=0x320 dma=1
./sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

>From dmesg

Both kernels are compiled with pci quirks enabled.

I've done a lot of rtfm'ing & tried a lot of stuff without success.

I'd appreciate any clues, hints, or email discussion anyone's willing

My Athlon system, equipped with a Voodoo3500 AGP/TV card, is running
Linux kernel 2.4.0-test12 with SuSE-7.0-Pro Distro. I can watched TV on
my system; however, I have never tried to connect an antenna to the
antenna input on the video card. In addition to the linux-2.4.0-test12
kernel and the kwintv/xawtv, I have to install the following packages
before the kwintv/xawtv can utilize the TV functions:

        1. i2c
        2. lm_sensors
        3. v3tv (only for the voodoo card - I believe)

I am not sure if the above information will help you or not.

umm...
Joerg might have high opinion on IDE but it doesn't change the fact
that ATAPI == SCSI (well, subset with transport over IDE)

it is...

it might be not optimal as Joerg told us, but all the
IDE-SCSI stuff in Linux IS the driver

yep, just discovered it reading cdrecord site, thanks anyway ;)

funny stuff about memorex is that they just rebage
someone else CDRW, so 2x2x16 is Ricoh(?) while
2x2x24 is JVC.

no wonder their capabilities are different though
they called the drive exchange "upgrade"...

I think that Epox have just like this. Try the Epox Via MVP3 G5 or
something like that.

Subject: Compact flash card woes.
Date: 14 Dec 2000 17:59:31 GMT

Greetings,
I can not get my Linux box to recognize
that there is a CF card in an adapter that
is in the PCMCIA card slot. No 'beep(s)',
no nothing. I have tweaked around with the
ide.opts file in /etc/pcmcia to no avail.
It is below.

The card services do function. They will
'beep away' with the modem or SCSI cards.
There have been no problems here.

The card and adapter have been slid into a
Win98 machine and mounts up on its machines
file system just fine. It was originally
formatted by a digital camera and as
side comment, a WinCE machine has no
problems with it either.

Linux 2.2.6
PCMCIA package 3.0.9
Distro: Slackware
Formatted by Canon S100 camera (it is just vfat)

The /etc/pcmcia/ide.opts file (which I think has
little to do with card recognition because the
computer acts as if there is no card in the slot).

# ATA/IDE drive adapter configuration
#
# The address format is "scheme,socket,serial_no[,part]".
#
# For multi-partition devices, first return list of partitions in
# $PARTS. Then, we'll get called for each partition.
#
case "$ADDRESS" in
*,*,*,1)
    DO_FSTAB="y" ; DO_FSCK="y" ; DO_MOUNT="y"
    FSTYPE="vfat"
    OPTS=""
    MOUNTPT="/flash"

There has to be a number on your SMC USB device. Look at your USB device and
not the software or control panel. It should at least have a FCC-ID number on it.
