Besides, of the three Fujitsu hard drives I have, one is a paperweight
with a lot of irreplaceable data on it (the lost data is my fault, of
course). I have had a couple of WD go bad. Lately, I have been using
mostly Maxtor drives and have not had any trouble. . . . yet.

well i was able to get my modem to switch to COM3 in Windows however it
doesn't work in linux yet. I posted a message in col.misc if you want to
take a look at it. Basically i'm giving setserial the same parameters i
gave it a year ago when I first had Linux on this machine but for some
reason now Linux doesn't wwant to communicate with my modem. Any and all
com ports I use setserial on tell me there is no modem attached. So what
gives?

Basically you will follow these steps:
1. Get SCSI working if you don't already (yes, even if you don't have a
SCSI card)
This is done by recompiling your kernel--not hard. This creates the
ide-scsi module
2. Set up your symbolic links appropriately:
ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdburner
3. Set up lilo to make the kernel use ide-scsi:
append=" mem=256M hdb=ide-scsi hdc=ide-floppy"
(hdb is my cdburner, this causes it to be /dev/scd0)
(hdc is a zip drive so I use the ide-floppy kernel module)
4. Get cdrecord:
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cdrecord.html
5. Get xcdroast:
http://www.xcdroast.org/
You should be good to go!

howto at

Yup, sounds like you're just running out of data. Try recording at single
speed first and work you're way up from there. As for nicing, you
shouldn't have to. How fast is your system? were you doing anything else
on the system while you were burning? I've got a 700Mhz Athlon and I can
still work and burn at 4X with no problem...8X has given me troubles

Ditto. I had a couple of WDs go bad well within the warranty period.
I've since gotten 2 IBMs and a Maxtor with no problems at all. It's
worth looking at linux-ide.org and see what mfgs are supporting Linux
IMO.

Subject: Creating driver diskette / How to compile modules?
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 06:23:41 GMT
Hello,
Running into a sticky situation where kernel support for a SCSI
chipset (SYMC1010/33 U160) is not available on distribution (RH6.2).
There is patched source to add support in the sym53c8xx module. I loaded
a machine non-scsi and have been trying to compile modules that could be
added to a driver diskette. I have the disk format figured out (modules
and mod directories ina gzip'd cpio archive) and have gotten the
diskette to run properly when booting from dist CD 'linux dd'. The boot
sequence asks for and reads the diskette, finds the driver modules. When
they are loaded however I get errors. When I manually try and add them
I get a screen full of "unresolved symbols" errors.
How do you compile kernel modules so that they can be loaded by any
kernel of that version and not just the one they were compiled in
conjunction with? Compiled so the 2.2.14-5.0BOOT kernel can read and
load the new/patched sym53c8xx.o module (compiled in 2.2.14-5.0 as
i386-up)??
As a side note I recompiled the kernel/module for each i386, i586
and i686 as up and smp and had all those modules available and correctly
named on the driver diskette. None of them work.
Hints? Help??
Thanks...

Fifteen months seems like a very long time. I've been
hoping for drivers for my hardware, but last update
was September 28, 1999. If my hardware was/is supported,
I would install Linux today.
But the issue goes beyond my particular hardware;
isn't the hardware compatibility howto really very
important to Linux's general acceptance?
