Hi,

I have an a7v and an ibm hdd attached to the ata100 controller. it works just
fine with suse 7.0 and the updated eide bootdisk:

On a pair of non-Dell SMP machines I have access to, using slot 1
PIII's, there is no power or regulator module such as you describe.
There are different cpu's that use different voltages though, often
depending on their core size and speed. You shouldn't install two cpu's
that differ in speed, and their stepping should also be close together.
I've heard something like stepping within 1, and others have gotten away
with stepping differences of 3, but you might find quirks if you do
that. Best to match them completely, right down to stepping. Probably
you will have to pay Dell lots of money, and they'll only sell those
regulators with a pair of cpu's. I guess you could ask them.

Since you mention an SMP kernel, is the motherboard by any chance using
the i840 chipset? If so, you are probably running into its broken
IO-APIC. If not, ignore this, since most chipsets work fine with SMP. In
the case of an i840 chipset, you'll need to boot with kernel option
"noapic".

Ultra-160 is outstanding. Dual cpu helps a lot on such a machine. But if
you get a motherboard with the Intel i840 chipset, you'll be buying
broken merchandise. The i840 has IO-APIC problems, and has to be run
with the IO-APIC disabled. Consider the newer Intel chipsets for SMP to
be non-Linux products, they are out of the market for high-end servers
(ServerWorks seems to be filling the role as the better chipset; they're
also much easier to contact and ask about chipset problems, Intel
completely sucks on this if you aren't a huge developer of their
products).

You will want a 64 bit PCI bus to handle the data levels you are talking
about, at the very least a dual channel controller (the third channel
you mention could be useful). I haven't used any of the recent Ultra-160
RAID products, but I have used Ultra-160 a lot, and have heard the RAID
products can be outstanding. The nice thing is that the drives
themselves really aren't much more expensive than the ultra2. For single
36 gig 10k rpm drives, I'm seeing average throughput just over 34
Mbyte/sec on each drive, and a burst of over 140 Mbyte/sec. The 72 Gbyte
drives will be in excess of that by quite a bit, and you'll saturate a
160 Mbyte/sec bus with probably 3 to 4 drives on a channel; the PCI bus
itself will be hurting from all the throughput, even with 64 bit.

"tar" could help. You can give it an --exclude-file(s) parameter. Copy
into an archive and then extract to a different place.
Alternatively keep yhe old disc and split the new disk into several
partitions for /usr /var etc. (not the /etc directory). Then copy the
contents of /usr to the relevant partition mounted on /mnt. Unmount from
/mnt and remount on /usr. The same for the rest.

Hi!

Would it be possible to port linux to a car navigation system like VDO
Daytons' MS-5000 ?

Since this system runs on a 32 bit RISC Processor, has 16 mb flashRom,
16 mb Ram, a 240x400 tft (colour) screen, a cd-rom-drive, a rs-232
interface and an audio-out, it seems to me that all ingredients for an
embedded linux system is there.

Anyone knows if this has been done before? Anyone has more technical
details?

there is a special HOWTO about this where various methods are
explained and discoussed. AFAIK it's called Hard Disk Upgrade Mini
Howto.

Maybe <cp -ax / /new_root> will do it, but you'll better read the howto.

Do you mean that it is an unfixable problem?

Because i have an all in one board i thought that it might be that i haven't

I am wondering if i can pin down the IRQ settings for the PCI card but I'm

Hello.

We are using cups for printing on a HPLaserJet P6.
The printer is at a printserver, which is spooled by a WindowsNt-Server.
Printing is ok.

But,

when we print out of our Application, which works inside a database, we
are using our own ANSI-ESC-sequences.
That is not working!!

Printing with lpr -Pprinter
is printing the ESC-sequences on the paper.

Printing with lpr -oraw -Pprinter
is printing a single line.
So no LineFeed!?

What to do?

Thanx a lot

If you manage to find them please let me know where you got them so I can

You will need USB support in your Linux Kernel. I had to upgrade to
2.2.16-3 and then apply a patch for improved USB. 2.2.3.x and 2.2.4 should
not need USB patches.

Bon Chance !
