I tried tar, cpio, Taper, and a simple backup script. They all seem to
freeze at some point in the backup process.

What is the vendor id?

I dont know hardware very well, so I will do my best to describe it to
you. According to my friend the pci cards have 'breaks' between the
connectors, and the isa cards are continuous. Therefore, I think I have
an isa card. As far as what kind of bus I put it in, I dont know. I just
know where the modem was in the window machine, and I put the new modem
in the same place: The second slot from the top. I assume you read my

setserial /dev/cua0 irq 9 port 0xfedffc00 autoconfig and substitute
ttys0 for cua0? I know this is asking alot, but lets assume I havent
done anything yet. Could you instruct me from the beginning on what I
need to do? Assume I know nothing, if I need to know something, tell me

I don't have this kind of drive. But you may find the help you need in
/usr/src/<kernel source top directory>/Documentation/Configure.help.

Search Configure.help file for "CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY". In the same
directory is a file called "ide.txt" which should give you all the
information you need. I am working from the source for kernel 2.4.0.

The key here is "no dial tone"

Which would make me wonder if the phone line is plugged into the modem. I
know this sounds silly....but ya never know...

Is the phone line good?
Can you plug a phone into THAT line, and get a dial tone?

Every time I had a "no dial tone" msg it was something to do w/the phone
line...

Thanks for the quick reply.

Configure.help makes no mention of devfs, but I got it to work when I
reloaded the ide-floppy module. For some reason, though it was loaded, it
did not create the proper nodes. I had to unload the module that my system
loaded at boot time and reload it with modprobe. This created the
/dev/disc/disc2/part4 entry and /dev/hdd4 link, which I could then mount.

To follow up to this, here are the outputs of hdparm -t and -T
on two drives,
/dev/hdc a 7200 rpm (I think) drive using UDMA33 and
/dev/hda a 5400 rpm drive using multi-word DMA
           -t -T
/dev/hda : 5.94 MB/sec 54.01 MB/sec
/dev/hdc : 8.85 MB/sec 54.47 MB/sec

These drives were set up with:

hdparm -q -d1 -u1 -c1 -m16 -X34 /dev/hda
hdparm -q -d1 -u1 -c1 -m16 -X66 /dev/hdc

likewise, I'm using a motherboard with the VIA vt82c586b IDE UDMA33
controller chipset, and all works seamlessly.

You need to compile in the specific VIA support if the ide drivers
are to work properly.

HI,

after some confusion with the automounter I have a cdrom-drive that is
locked, meaning I can mount and unmount it, but I can't release the cdrom
in it. Of course a reboot would help, but do I have other options, to reset
the scsidrive or unlock it?

I am running the beta ASP Linux RC3, more stable then RH 7 and Mandrake 7.2. For a
graphics card I used an Geforce 2 GTS and like this a lot more then anything else I
have used, S3 wouldn't even be a consideration. The 2D is best when you use the Nvidia
accelerated drivers, it effects the 2D also.

don't bother trying to distinguish them. get an _EXTERNAL_ modem.
find one that hooks up to your serial port (RS-232C not USB). it's
guarenteed not a winmodem and you get das blinkenlights.

It is. Installing Win2K over Linux actually requires using a DOS boot
disk after the first reboot to fix the MBR.

Actually, WinNT required the same thing. As did Win98 and Win95.
Maybe I'm the exception? I've never had problems installing Linux
either before or after any Windows.

Actually, what I eventually ended up doing to get around bizarre boot
problems was rip out LILO's boot sector, save it as c:\bootsect.lnx,
and use NT/2K's loader to start it from there. It added a step to the
LILO process (e.g., `dd if=/dev/hda5 of=/mnt/bootsect.lnx bs=512
count=1') but I only did it once I got a stable system - so I didn't
have to re-run LILO a lot.

But LILO has the nice feature of being able to pick, when the OS is
running, which OS you want to use for the next reboot. Like that good
old OS/2 command of "boot /dos" or "boot /os2". I wrote a script to
change the default to Windows and immediately reboot, and left the
default selection at Linux so that simply rebooting Windows would
switch.

They'll be automatically detected, but not formatted (probably). You
can format them using mke2fs.

Sort of like Windows. Each disk is assigned a device name based on
its type and position in the bus. Use `dmesg' or look at the boot
logs to find out where Linux is putting each disk. (It'll look like
"hda: hda1", which means Linux has detected one partition on /dev/hda
and is calling it /dev/hda1.)

You should be able to eject the CD when the drive is unmounted. Try
the `eject' command, but be warned that if the drive is actually stuck
it will probably hang your system.

And don't count on a simple reboot to get the disc out. I've been
involved in a few cases where only a cold restart (power off, power
on) would work. I'm not sure what the flakey part of my setup is, but
the problem sometimes happens in Windows, too, so I doubt it's
Linux-related.

Subject: Problematic Video Cards?
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 14:28:23 -0500

I recently built a computer from spare parts for use with windows and
linux. The only new thing I purchased for it was a monitor (Samtron
75V). I have tried three video cards I had laying around, but can't get
decent resolution (> 640x480) using any of them under linux. The first
is a Jaton Video 61-3D (S3 GX chip), makes short vertical lines where
the mouse pointer should be along with a perfect mouse pointer along
side. The second is a Diamond Stealth Video 2500 (Alliance ProMotion
AT24 chip) which just locks everything once the X-server starts. The
last is a Western Digital Pipeline Paradise (WD9710 chip), which won't
allow me to configure under Xconfigurator, just keep getting "Can't
display in XXkpp mode", no matter what resolution or color depth. Are
all three of these cards known to have trouble under linux? I'm using
Mandrake Linux 7.2, so I assume I have fairly recent versions of the
XFree86 drivers. My next option is to go and find a cheap and stable
video card. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tim Leger

I gather from your responses that you don't have any docs
for the modem describing it and it's excact model #.
You can look in the BIOS, and if it is a Plug and Play
modem it may show up there. Otherwise,
open up the computer case and take the card
out of its slot; there is probably some model info
on the card itself. Most modern PCs have at most 3 kinds
of slots - a short, offset, light brown one, called AGP, where the
video card goes, medium length white ones called
PCI, and some longer dark brown ones which are ISA.
All recent motherboards would have at least AGP and PCI.
Motherboards more than 3 years old or so might only
have PCI and ISA. If you know the type of motherboard you
have, then you can probably find docs for it on the net to
show the exact compliment of slots and their layout.
Otherwise, the relative order of the lengths
I describe would be standard; colors might conceivably vary,
though I have never seen that personally.

Subject: ibm T21 laptop network card.

Hello,

I have IBM T21 labtop running caldera 2.4 eDesktop kernel 2.2.14.
It has a network card and modem built in. They are on the same card.
It is a IBM 10/100 Ethernet mini-pci adapter
or 3COM 10/10 mini-pci Ethernet adapter.
I believe they are the same card. When I cat /dev/pci, it says 3Com.

I've tried the latested 3Com drivers "netdriver-2.1.src.rpm" with no
success.
I've tried the intel 10/100 B driver with no success.
I'm not sure which driver to use. I'm not a newbe.

Can someone help?

Lamar

A lot of people seem to ignore it...

Possible, I use a Linux distro which is several years old on my PIII, and with
this one it wasn't possible to do that.

Hi,

just add the -march=i486 option when calling gcc.

*L*

I wouldn't say that I "ripped off" the site layout...in fact the java menus
are not MS at all....but the look resembles it in a way...

Sheesh!!
Now I'm going to have the MS police knocking at my door...

Have a good one!

I think just adding Windows would be good...

Might as well cover all the bases eh?
