if you REALLY must use the DPC stuff and you want to use Linux, set up a
cheap Windows box as a router (a reconditioned system from Tiger
www.tigerdirect.com will work great for this (you might have to add a USB
card). I think they ahve a full dell system, PII, 233mhz, just enough HD
to run it, etc) for about $350 with monitor.

I have the AR220E, which is similar. You should add the
AR-box as the *primary* DNS server. It will respond to
requests from the private network, using the external
DNS servers.

hook up the new hard disk.
partition it with fdisk or cfdisk .
fsck it, and then use cp to copy over the files at a file system level. Make
sure to specify recursive, preserve permissions, copy links as links , etc..
( I think there's an option to not go across partitions, but if not, use tar
. It has such an option )
finally , use a boot disk, and tell lilo to install itself into the the new
hdd, but make sure you chroot to the new hdd's root first.
Oh, and don't forget to specify to the kernel image where the root file
system is. Or you can pass it as a lilo parameter ( root=/dev/hda7 )
Note that using cfdisk creates a partition table that is readable by windows
systems, while fdisk will not. It will only modify such a table. Not having
such a table can cause non-linux systems to have a brain fart. like when
Win2k decided to "fix" my partition table on another drive :) . That is one
night I do not wish to repeat.

Subject: Swap Partition Error
hi
recently, i've been receiving the following error report in
/var/log/message:
Feb 14 05:10:21 kernel: attempt to access beyond end of
device]
Feb 14 05:10:21 kernel: 03:03: rw=0, want=754065968,
limit=2827440t [IPCP 14 05:10id=0x3 <addr 1kernel: dev 03:03
blksize=4096 blocknr=-1958967157 sector=1508131928 size=4096 count=1
i'm guessing device 03:03 is /dev/hda3. that's my swap partition (it's
approx 90MB). when i receive this error, my filesystem usually sustains
some damage. The last time this happened, linux reported that i had a
file that was several terabytes long (which is wrong since i've only got
an 8GB hdd :))), libraries were deleted when i ran fsck and it caused me
a lot of headaches overall.
I know that my harddrive isn't damaged. i've run badblocks on it several
times. i've been running linux on this HDD for a while now...and it's
only recently that these problems have been cropping up. what exactly is
the problem and how can i fix it???
thanks

Hi there =)
Im wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right question.
I have just recieved a dell poweredge server. it has a perc 3/si raid
controller on it (I think Adaptec is the OEM) I am trying to install
mandrake on the drives hung off of the raid controller. When it goes to
boot off the cd it doesnt detect the raid controller and thus doesnt see
any drives and wont let me continue. I did make a boot disk with a
kernel that can see the controller and other hardware. It boots but
stops and says i need to pass init= to the kernel. Does anyone know how
I can get around this??
Thanks,

I had a problem like this as well, with a promise ata66 card on an asus p2b.
I had to find the hex address of the card and add that as a kernel
parameter.
for mine it was something like:
ide2=0x8008,0x8016 ide3=0x9009,0x9016
you will of course have to either scan your pci bus in linux, or use windows
to find what these numbers are for you. I found a great article about it in
one of the HOWTOs

Take a look at /etc/conf.modules.
Mine looks like this:
alias eth0 3c59x
alias eth1 3c59x
Those are the two ethernet cards installed and the module necessary to
handle them.

That would frag the software-RAID setup I have currently. I have

Sorry flatfish, he wasn't asking for lame ass jokes -
The laptop no doubt came with windows, he is asking
for some info on getting the pcmcia ethernet card up
and running in Linux.
ifconfig won't load the drivers for the ethernet card
unless they have been made known to the system.
Check the file /etc/modules.conf and see if there is
a line containing the string "eth".
If not, the module has to be configured -
The Red Hat web site has excellent documentation
on this, as does the install guide that comes with RH.
If in doubt, consult one of the linux help groups -

Hello,
your configuration seems to be ok (termination and so on). What does
happen if you do large data transfers on the harddisk while using the
scanner ?? I am not a friend of using scanners, zip drives,... at the
same SCSI controller together with hardisks. Maybe you could get a very
cheap controller for the scanner.
