I'm pretty sure it's a winmodem (i.e. no it won't)

The USRobotics V90 _external_ one is fine, as should pretty
much all external modems.

I'm a real newbie, sorry. I configured correctly my modem, it dials and
connects but after the tool-bar applet starts I can't launch any
application. The only one answer I get is "Sorry,KDE desktop unable to
open -name of app-". I can use previously opended applications and the
connection is good. I tried to open the console before connecting and then I
tried to launch netscape. The error reported was "x11- unable to connect to
0.0"

Plese help me, I'm glad 'cause my "linmodem" works fine but I can't enjoy a
good internet ppp session

Good day,

I think the Lucent winmodem in my Compaq presario 1926 notebook
is just one step away from working.

I'm using RH7 with kernel 2.4 and this is my modem:

00:09.0 Communication controller: Lucent Microelectronics WinModem 56k
(rev 01)
Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. Presario 56k V.90 DFi Modem

 I/O ports at 10ec [size=4]
 I/O ports at 10e8 [size=4]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 1

Below is from the documentation of Lucent winmodem linux driver
5.78e:

Diagnostics replies including "Lucent" or "Xircom" may be returned by:

Note the lead designation like " 00:0a.0 ".
Next look for the information block beginning with 00:0a.0 ,
when querying again with:

The modems known to be supported by the ltmodem.o driver have
ID number pairs shown in the following Table. Ignore the leading 0x.
The id pair 11c1:0440
is within the range: 11c1:0440-045c
and hence should be supported by ltmodem.o.
**********************************************************************

It seems that the 00:0a.0 (btw, what is it?) as assumed by Lucent
is being used by my esssolo sound card, so my system hangs every time
when I tried to load the lucent driver.

I strongly believe there's must be a way out, can any kind soul shed
me some light and reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanx very much in advance!

Hello

I'm currently doing background reading on a project aiming to create a
Hard disk back up system for a Palm Pilot. In the specificfation data
from the Hard disk is to be sent to the Palm Pilot via the Palm Pilot's
RS-232 link. Therefore to reduce
control overheads I am looking at developing some form of secondary
processor
to handle file input and retrieval from the hardrive, then sending the
data up
the RS 232.

I was thinking of using a X4000E FPGA to interface with the IDE Hard
disk interface. With a microprocessor running a version of embedded Linux

to handle File Allocation and retrieval.

However I have never used Linux before and would appreciate any advice,
or useful websites surrounding the development of such a system.
Especially any cheap development boards that could be used to create
such a system.

Thanks alot

Just get any external serial modem and you'll be fine.

Some PCI and USB and ISA work fine, bust an external serial is far
easier if you have no other preference.

What are you confused about? He said all external modems work (because
they ARE modems, not _win_modems). He meant "all external modems that
run off the serial port" (not the USB port, not the parallel port ...).

My MSI-something or other has three of these beasts. One thermistor you
stick on the processor, a spare one I have stuck on the heat sink of my
video card and a jumper for the third, which I don't have a thermistor for
right now, and I presume you can put anywhere else. You'll have to compile
some new kernel modules (i2c and sensors) to use them, at least I did, but
it works great. I can see those temps, my fan RPMS (well 2 of them anyway)
and all my voltages.

I wouldn't buy from PC World or any High Street dealer. The mail order
companies are cheaper as they have lower overheads. You're not going to
need tech support for a modem (I hope:). Try http://www.scan.co.uk/ ,
they are listing a Diamond SupraExpress external for 50UKP, these are
good.

Just about any external modem that plugs into a serial port will work
fine with Linux (I can't think of any that won't but there may be one
or two).

Most (if not all) internal PCI modems (generally referred to as
"winmodems") won't work as they require software drivers that do
some of the work done by hardware in external modems. Such software
is generally called a "driver" and is generally written/supplied
only for MS or Mac systems. A few winmodems can be got to work,
but most won't and can't be made to.

Personally I've found a Diamond Supraexpress 56e Pro works fine
(this is the external version of the modem - there is an internal
one calles the 56i - avoid that one). USR extenal modems should
work, as should any external modem that supports the Hayes
command set (just about all do).

If you are wanting to cluster for loadbalancing servers or HA then
 http://linux-ha.org/
OR
 http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/
might be more appropriate
