Did you check the motherboard jumper to enable the onboard sound?
Also there usually is a bios setting to turn sound on.

By the way , I have a similar motherboard and I couldn't get it to
work either. :-) My awe32 sounds better anyways.

Subject: Spontaneous machine reboot on kernel load
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 13:27:26 -0500

The spontaneous reboot occurs as soon as the kernel finishes
decompressing (as soon as it starts), with no readable message. It
instantly resets the entire machine, all the way to the memory check.

The system:

Chips and Tech. VGA card (also tried RealTek cheapie, no change)
20MB of RAM (also pulled that out and installed 8MB only)
486DLC processor (supported in MB BIOS - Acer BIOS) + Cx87DLC CoPro
Acer M1419 based motherboard
Winbond IO card (verified working in another machine)

I have tried disabling all cache, and switching all bios settings to the
minimum, to no avail. I have a sinking feeling its the fault of the
M1419 chipset, but if someone could reaffirm or perhaps give a
workaround, I'd appreciate it. I have an eeprom burner/eraser, so if you
know of an update to the BIOS, I'd be happy to accept.... the parts were
free so if I could get the thing running, I'd be very happy.

Thanks,

David

Subject: Buying a new computer for linux
Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 17:38:44 +0000

Hi,

I'm in the process of selecting parts for a new computer. I'm planning on
building it myself, so no problems as far as being able to get a
particular configuration, but I don't know what bits of hardware have
drivers written for them, etc...
I have no previous experience of linux, so sorry in advance for any stupid
mistakes.
Please bear in mind when making any suggestions that I want to have a dual
boot Windows 95/ Linux system, but I really don't care too much about the
windows setup, since I only want it for a few games.

So, firstly, is there a web site that's kept well up to date, listing all
the currently available drivers?

or, alternatively, could someone tell me if the following have drivers,
and if neccesary (not included in current RedHat installation, or
whatever), where to get them.

STB Velocity 4400 AGP graphics card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live

And could anyone make suggestions for the following bits:

Hard disk - approx. 8Gb, cheap, fast

CD Drive - not especially fast 12x would suit, but reliable and well
supported essential.

Zip Drive - Again, I want something that won't give me any hassle.

Network card - I want to be able to use both types of network connection -
Sorry, I know one of them is BNC, I don't know the other - the one that
looks like a telephone connection. :-)

I'd prefer replies to be sent directly to myself, but I'll check the group
anyway.

Cheers...

The third-party ghostscript driver "hpdj" is known to work "at least
bascially" with this printer. See
ftp://ftp.pdb.sni.de/pub/utilities/misc/hpdj.html

It is probable that other cdj* printer drivers will work also.
Several contributed Ghostscript RPMs are known to inlcude the hpdj
driver; look for one of those.

When you have it going, please report how well it does or doesn't
work, or just update the Printing HOWTO's compatability listing
yourself to include this printer.

Your question is indefinite, it is not obvious whether
your program is compute-bound or i/o-bound.

If these 500Meg files are just written line by line as results
are computed, then their size is probably irrelevant and
your program is likely compute-bound. Faster processor,
faster cache and more main RAM are what you need then.

If those 500Meg files are scratch pads that you access over
and over again, then disk i/o speed may be limiting. If that
is the case, then adding LOTS more RAM and devoting a
big chunk to disk caching can help more than anything else.

Even if you are compute-bound, whether raw processor speed,
cache size or main RAM size is most helpful is not obvious.

Questions:
Have you profiled the code to find out where it is spending time?
Have you tried changing the OS disk cache settings to see what
effect (if any) that has?
Do you know whether your EXE and all allocated memory fits
in available RAM or does it go out into swapfile?

Tell us more and we can make better suggestions.

Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 09:45:03 -0600

I have just installed Red Hat 5.2 on my system and most things are
working well, but I cannot get X going. I read that the 3.3.3.1 version
of XFree86 had support for my video card (SiS 6326 with 8MB) so I
downloaded and installed it.

I can run xf86config and that seems to work ok, but when I bring up X it
looks hosed. My mouse pointer appears on the screen and I can control
it, but the screen itself looks strange. Mostly black with a couple of
dots and tiny images which look like the resize controls on windows.
Junk.
I can even move some of them around, but the system is not exactly
usable.

The X server complains about the amount of RAM on the card and claims
there is only 1 MB.

I also cannot get xvidtune to run.

Any ideas?

The no_accel option is actually not a good one to try, since it limits the
color depth to 8-bit (if I'm remembering the restriction correctly). Pick
"no_bitblt" and "no_imageblt" instead, as follows:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Video Card"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    BoardName "Unknown"
    VideoRam 8192
    Option "no_bitblt"
    Option "no_imageblt"
    Option "sw_cursor"
    # Option "no_accel" # Use this if acceleration is causing problems
    # Option "fifo_moderate"
    # Option "fifo_conserv"
    # Option "fifo_aggresive"
    # Option "fast_vram"
    # Option "pci_burst_on"
    # Option "xaa_benchmark" # DON'T use with "ext_eng_queue" !!!
    # Option "ext_eng_queue" # Turbo-queue. This can cause drawing
                             # errors, but gives some accel
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

This is working fine on my Diamond Speedstar A50 AGP card with 8MB video
ram.

Been there, done that. The configuration is screwed up. XConfigurator gets a
few things wrong, and you can manually edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to fix it.
Here's the relevant piece:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Video Card"
    VendorName "Unknown"

You need the latest XFree86. I'm using 3.3.3.1-1 and it's working
fine. Here's the relevant piece out of /etc/X11/XF86Config:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Video Card"

I'm using XFree 3.3.3.1-1 and it's working with the Diamond Speedstar
A50. Here's the piece out of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Video Card"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    BoardName "Unknown"
    VideoRam 8192
    Option "no_bitblt"
    Option "no_imageblt"
    Option "sw_cursor"
    # Option "no_accel" # Use this if acceleration is causing problems
    # Option "fifo_moderate"
    # Option "fifo_conserv"
    # Option "fifo_aggresive"
    # Option "fast_vram"
    # Option "pci_burst_on"
    # Option "xaa_benchmark" # DON'T use with "ext_eng_queue" !!!
    # Option "ext_eng_queue" # Turbo-queue. This can cause drawing
                             # errors, but gives some accel
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Subject: /dev/sndstat: operation not supported by device
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 16:04:20 GMT

I have fairly recently installed Redhat 5.2, and I'm up to
kernel 2.2.1. I have an Ensoniq AudiPCI 1370, which
seems to work fine. But, I can't get "cat /dev/sndstat"
to work. I get the following message:

cat: /dev/sndstat: Operation not supported by device

I'm at a loss. And the thing is, I have an app which needs
this function (Multitrack 2.2).
Help is appreciated!

There's a bug in the XConfigurator. Here's the piece out of my
/etc/X11/XF86Config file:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Video Card"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    BoardName "Unknown"
    VideoRam 8192
    Option "no_bitblt"

    # Option "fifo_moderate"
    # Option "fifo_conserv"
    # Option "fifo_aggresive"
    # Option "fast_vram"
    # Option "pci_burst_on"
    # Option "xaa_benchmark" # DON'T use with "ext_eng_queue" !!!
    # Option "ext_eng_queue" # Turbo-queue. This can cause drawing
                             # errors, but gives some accel
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

I would guess on the Mach 64 driver. Did he try to run SuperProbe?

Hello, I have compiled a few kernels in my time, but not in quite a while.
Here's what I do:

cd /usr/src/linux
make config -- hold down return to get the "defaults"
make dep
make clean
make zImage

It dies when trying to link:

"ld -qmagic ... head.o ...
 ld: warning cannot find entry symbol -start;
        defaulting to 000ffe0
 kernel/kernel.o: ln funciton 'show_task':..."

Any ideas? Is is something I am doing who or a problem with the SuSe install?
Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks..

The fact that is called xsvga does not mean that is not accelerated.
If I remeber the release notes from Xfree86 3.3.3, the xsvga server is
still not accelerated as it could be for the riva TNT but it is
accelerated.
If you want to compare with a not hardware acc. server try xvga, you
will
see the difference ;)

All that's required to use the Iomega Jaz drives is a supported SCSI
card.
