for the 100th time: Use the strace, luke....
make sure you have a few megs left on /tmp/.
strace -o /tmp/strace.log make dep
wait until the output stops running.
eventually, ctrl-C out of the situation.
start scanning the _end_ of /tmp/strace.log and try to figure out if your
process got stuck in some system call or something similar.
it does not always work, but many tiems it does, and then, the
catharsis...
