well, if i would go about it. first i would write down every error or wierd things in
the kernel startup before it panics. then, i would try some boot disks from other
distros, especially the laptop oriented ones,
which are in ur cdrom marked probably "alternative" or "other" which will be named 2.2
something pcmcia a/b/c.
if it doesn't work try something, like this one:
http://tiny.seul.org/en/index.html
or this one:
http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/
or any other u fancy. (the slackware are very good also).
anyway, once u booted the machine and mounted ur hd. u can recompile a new kernel from
scratch which u can get from ftp.kernel.org and put only what u want in it and try to
find what get the laptop to crash.
or try the already ready kernel sources and recompile there (though i am not sure it
will work since they do wierd stuff in those kernels).

note: i got those crush too with my old laptop (thinkpad) with kernels 2.4 with no
apperant reason, but with 2.2 it worked ok, and once u fidelle with it enough it will
work in the end. u just got to find the problematic device driver.

Subject: Compaq notebooks and RH7.2

Hi, everyone.
I've recently spend a couple of days trying to install RH7.2 on Presario
701EA (don't by it) laptop. Even though the installation goes without errors
or serious issues, there are problems after trying to run:
1. On reboot the laptop doesn't boot from hard disk.
2. If using startup diskette, it starts booting Linux, but kernel crashes.

Any ideas/experience with those laptops? Maybe suggestion as to some other
distro?

Thanks in advance,
Gregory.
