Hi,

There are glitches with Compaq Presario 700 series notebooks and
Linux, for three reasons: 1. Something is wrong with PCI IRQ routing
or similar, and you should use a kernel with recent ACPI patches
that allow doing that via ACPI (note that latest 2.4.x and even 2.5.x does not
have these patches), 2. Athlon optimized kernels
Oops like crazy on those because of gcc/kernel/... bugs.
3. The PNPBIOS patch included in recent Mandrake distribution kernels
also makes this laptop crash. I'm not sure if it's a bug with the patch
or with the laptop.
Some people have managed to get Linux working on these, in a limited fashion,
but there are still various crashes in X because of the S3 Twister K
video chip and I haven't heard anyone who managed to get the built-in
i810-like sound to work... probably because of IRQ problems, maybe
with the ACPI patches it might work, I don't know.

Good luck getting it running on yours, I know I've given up.
