I've had both RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE and Turbo Linux installed on a Compaq laptop, though it was an Armada (great computer - buy it, if you can find it), and w/o a glitch. the most common laptop installation problem is the graphics adapter. everyone and their dog are using ATi Rage Mobility, but Compaq have recently changed to some kookamy S3 chipset, which isn't well supported even under windows ;-) But that doesn't seem to be your problem. can you desribe the partition setup you used (and the graphics adapter, while your at it).
