KDE is a bit problematic with some commercial X servers. I tried StarWin-32 latest version on Windows 98 connecting to my Red Hat 7.3 machine, and it seems that in "single mode" it works fine, but not in "multi mode". When you start a session, there's a log in VT0 - could you see where it is freezing? Also, do not forget to update to KDE 3.0.5 RPMS (available for Red Hat 8.0) which fixes some of the freezes and crashes.
