I was there. I thought that GBY's talk was quite good, although (a)
he was the final speaker, (b) he was cut off due to time constraints,
(c) he was too Stallman-like for my taste, and (d) he didn't talk very
much (if at all) about Hamakor -- but that might have been because of
time constraints.
Overall, I was happy and impressed by the attendance at the
open-source session. The representatives from Sun and the government
both talked about the need for competition; GBY was the only one who
really spoke about the "free software" world view, versus the "open
source" world view.
Ira> what is the future of Hebrew standartization on the web?
>From the talk that Boaz Dolev (the government rep) gave at the
conference, it sounds like things are moving ahead steadily on
OpenOffice.org, but that there's still a wide gap between what the
average user needs and what will be available shortly. Nevertheless,
everyone is excited -- and for good reason -- about the upcoming
release of OpenOffice.org with Hebrew-language support.
The fact that open-source software was a major topic of discussion at
the conference is a good sign. Of course, the speaker from Sun said
that the organizers didn't know what to do with his slides, because
they came in a format other than PowerPoint...
Ira> what did they serve for lunch?
Ah, now *that* was a good reason to attend the conference... although
every year, I seem to forget how quickly the desserts disappear...
