can I trust the state it holds? I think I read somewhere once that it
can be giving me the wrong info in some odd cases (read-only
filesystems, RAMfs and other cases I have to deal with.

Amos: this is an Oracle cluster. I wish I could try other exotic
filesystems but it has to be compliant with their tested configurations.
plus I don't know of any stable enough other than maybe CIFS, which adds
too much complexity to our setup. but thanks :)
