Mandrake are using the RPM installation package system. Ideally you would retrieve the SRPM (Source RPM) of the original package (which creates any patches and configuration changes made) and adapt it to use the new sources (the source tgz is one of the thing that go into such an SRPM). You would generate an RPM from such SRPM and install that, assuming of course that someone else hasn't done all of this for you already.
