The problem with this is that Mandrake separates SAMBA into four different RPM's:

samba-server-2.2.7a-9.2mdk
samba-common-2.2.7a-9.2mdk
samba-doc-2.2.7a-9.2mdk
samba-client-2.2.7a-9.2mdk

The CVS or any source tgz I would get is all in one directory structure. Would I
have to break it up and create four RPM's? Is that possible without breaking the
conf and make files?

I have not checked it, but I believe you will find that there is only one SRPM. It comes with a spec file, and this file produces four RPMS from one source.
