Buy a board with a SATA2 controller, and SATA2 disks with at least 8MB cache.
(7200 rpm or higher, with 3 years warranty). It is worth the trouble, and its
very seldom today to buy a new system with ATA drives, and they become
scarce.

SATA2 is two times faster than SATA (also known as SATA-150).
