Hi,
I am long-time Linux user and I plan to buy my next computer trying
knoppix on it
Well, Knoppix is a very good test but there's only that much you can check
in a 10min Linux session
Right, knoppix will transparently fall back to VESA if it sees unsupported
video card (ATI, NVidia).
Knoppix would also not show you compatibility of special hardware (RAIDs,
thumb readers, SD/MMC readers, USB and Firewire adapters, WiFi). But then,
if you buy such devices, you must do your homework first.
It's wise to check before hardware purchase using one of the following Linux
Compatibility lists
You are falling back to the same trap, that made Linux so hard to penetrate
Desktop market.
Even me will not start browsing the sites in search of optimal
configuration.
Too many peoples, that got in the trap, by keeping it complex, helped to
prosper such companies as EmperorLinux.com, that are not afraid to charge x2
for certified linux compatible laptop.
