Hi all
I was hacking some of the linux commands but now I got a serious
problem. I have (rather, had) RHL 6.1 on an AMD k6@450 and with X working
pretty happily on a SiS 6326. Yesterday I logged in as an ordinary user
and gave the command

$mail root < /sbin/dump /dev/hda9
        ...or something like that
        /* hda9 is my / partition of 2.5 GB */

Then I logged in as root and it said there was mail for me
When I executed the command "mail" it gave all kinds of nonsense about
errors about some inodes etc so I panicked and gave

#df
This said my / partition had 1.2 GB used but 0 MB free!!

Then I gave..
#shutdown -nfr now
because i didn't want it to check the root filesystem.

When I rebooted it said "kernel panic:VFS: unable to mount root fs on
03:09"

when i booted off the CD and mounted my partitions the "/" partition is
empty but "/boot" <dev/hda7> is still safe.

This is fairly long mail, but what's the probz. Should I reinstall
or is there a way to get back the data, some of which are very important?

Thanx in advance,
cheedu
