You didn't post the version numbers of sort. On my FreeBSD box, which
also has GNU sort, I get the SuSE behavior.
freebsd $ sort --version
sort - GNU textutils 1.14
redhat 6.1 $ $ sort --version
sort (GNU textutils) 2.0

Perhaps the change in behavior is specific to the sort version ?
