Errr, No ! The Kernel needs to be compiled with APM support and Power
Off on shutdown ( which I presume RH 6.1's kernel comes built with )
support. 
apmd is useful when you are running on UPS, battery or on a
laptop for suspending, resuming et al. As far as the original problem
is concerned, I presume it must be the buggy BIOS problem. Does it
dump the stack before rebooting or anything fishy before it reboots ?
