This might happen once in a long while. Enter your root password and login
as root. Make sure / is mounted ro 
mount  <enter>
Then do a 
fsck  /  <enter>
Now some very important questions might be asked which if you answer
wrongly might lead to data loss and corruption. (if you knew that you
wouldn't be asking this.) So close your eyes an press 'y' (basically
accept whatever is recommended as default). When all questions are
finished press ctrl-D and reboot. You might have to repeat the process
once more if the damage has been more than minor. But the system should
recover itself. (I've done this a few times and still don't know enough to
answer all the questions correctly, but I've never had to reinstall, so
good luck).

TIP: Shutdown your machine properly, get an UPS, Get SuSE 6.4 with
reisser-journalling filesystem, bear patiently and change to ext3 when it
arrives.
