The alsactl program is part of the alsa-utils package. I think you'll
need alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils. Also, the latest version is
0.5.7.
I don't know much about the RPM based installation for ALSA, but for
/dev/dsp to work, you have to enable OSS emulation. You'll have to add
a few "alias" lines in your /etc/conf.modules like this: (I'll assume
you (or the RPM) already added the basic ALSA aliases)
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm1-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm1-oss
This enables you to use /dev/dsp etc. which are the OSS devices. Of
course, your RPM installation should have already made the devices in
/dev for you. Also make sure that the module parameters are right for
your card (in /etc/conf.modules). Read the INSTALL file that came with
ALSA (I'm sorry, I don't know if it's there in the RPM installation,
just search around somewhere).

Disquieting ...

We need to find some new terms to describe the rest of us mere mortals
then.

Surely, Linus is talking about the kind of idiocy that others aspire to :-).
