        I think ashley is right. IIRC RH changed their distro to include
the xfs as the font server instead of the older scheme where the X server
itself would render the fonts.
        What is broken in this case is clearly the xfs setup - as is clear
from the error reported by X. So I think it makes sense to reinstall xfs,
make sure that if you do a /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start, then xfs comes up
decently and stays there, listening on a unix domain socket (do a
netstat).

        This will probably work also, but its an alternate setup. And
moreover in doing this you will probably lose your ttf fonts (which only
xfs knows how to render, the X server doesn't atleast as of 3.3.6).
