Motherboards running pentium 166Mhz or below dont really support 8 Gb and above.
However even in such case the bios companies provides BIOS s/w upgrades to introduce
the support for larger disks.

Concern for running linux is different. These days hard disks have far surpassed the
1024 cylinders mark. Hovering around 16000 cylinders linux is unable to provide full
support for it without tweaking. In case u have only linux on your HDD it is not an
issue. But if you have multiple OS then a way around this problem is too keep a linux
native partition typically 100mb within the first 1024 cylinders and mount it as
/boot. Rest of the linux u can dump anywhere u feel like.

There is not much difference in prices... but it is worth to buy the IBM Deskstar
7200rpm disks with ATA66. But then of course if ur m/b doesnt support ATA66 it will
not make much diff. Seagate U-series drives are reliable but... they run at 5400rpm
and therefore loose out on seek time. Quantum is good as far as life is concerned..
but price to performance ratio is not too good.. if you have the money.. buy Seagate
Cheetah x15 18LP. Running at 15000 rpm... there is not match in the market yet.
Infact its the only one at that speed right now. To cut the long story short... but
IBM Deskstar ( mind it othetr IBM models arent good) Seagate has just released a new
range of barracuda drives.. its a different design actually and it kicks ass....
