Get ready to be bombed people, this mail is going to put paid to a lot
of claims made about SuSE and ReiserFS. Comes after condensing the
widsom
of 75 pages of download about reiserfs, and some practical experience.
SuSE 6.3 installation.
As for the people who have said, lately, that SuSE takes more time than
necessasy for installation of package and quoted that "Installation can
easily take 5 minutes on drives bigger than 4 GB" need be corrected for
it.
It is a wrong quote. What YaST2 refers to there is JUST the formatting
time
for the HDD in normal mode.
ReiserFS support : Downloadable.
Binand very well deserves credit for downloading the patches from SuSE
site
for re-burning CD-1 of SuSE 6.3's 6 CD commercial set. The CD was
patched for
reiserfs support so that we can have an RFS system [Khader?].
Last night I was able to complete installation on my m/c. YaST2 was used
for
complete automatic installation of 'almost everything' for finding out a
conservative partitioning scheme for the HDD of 8.4 G. Right now
everything
is fine and the system started working last night at 1:30 am and then I
went
to sleep.
The formatting etc for reiserfs was damn fast and the file-system check
is also
too good. One thing I am yet to ascertain. It seems that /boot partition
on my
drive can _not_ be reiserfs type. Earlier I had problems in formatting
the
/ and /boot for reiserfs while the rest of the partitions could be
formatted
properly, for reiserfs, at the installation time. So this time, I chose
/boot
as an ext2 partition and LO! Everything is fine now.
/boot ext2 : Formatting returned error for reiserfs.
/ and all the rest reiserfs.
Now I think I will be doing some filesystem benchmarking very soon. Will
post
the results. After connecting the machine to the net. Say, anyone got
any tips
or experiences while connecting a realtek clone PCI ethernet card? {I am
reading
HOWTOs on my own, but may be you will spare me the troube]
