i'm still a newbie.... so excuse me if theres a better way.
Create a boot & rescue disk. Boot into the m/c with these. mount / under a
directory. edit /etc/inittab with pico. change the line that reads
initdefault:5:.... to 3. you'll find this line almost at the begining of
the file.

Hi,
While booting, Linux directly goes to the X environment. Now since my X
is not configured properly
X never comes up. How do I bypass X and login directly into command
prompt so that I can configure my X
