Poorly Documented, Yes ! But I have done that once or maybe twice
without any problems. Sometimes M$ makes their own things sit back
comfortably. I Never backed up io.sys, msdos,sys or boot record.

Just adding a line something like
C:\="Microsoft windows"  in BOOT.INI did work then.
