HI,
thanks for taking the time to read this...
Background Info: Sir I am a first year engineering student interested in
computers and I have some experience with programming... very minimal
but it is there, I know the syntax of C and C++... I think I am capable
of processing large chucks of information... PLease refrain from
recommending Dummies series and books concentrating on the GUI part et
al :-). And as far as Linux goes I some how managed to install it and am
running it... I connect to the internet
using my linux box.
WEll, I am new to Linux and want to get a good book to get me some
practical knowledge and beyond. I want to know about...
1. compiling my own kernel
2. Linux directory structure
3. Linux administration
4. Networking, internet
5. Programing in Linux
Basically I want to understand what drives linux.. I believe the
ultimate is reading the source code but I'll get around to it
later... First let me learn how to telnet into my ISP's server...what's
autoexec equivalent in linux.. that kinda thing.
Though all that info is easily available on the net and in fact
documentation is there on my computer also but I would prefer to read a
book... Reading large amount of text is very straining.
I have two options... "Redhat 6.1 Unleashed" Or "Linux Unleashed"?
Or maybe you could suggest some other book?
Could you also please suggest some books on Networking... I have desktop
computer... And my exposure to networks is nil... expect for www...
etc.... I would want to know more about computer networks.. I mean a bit
in-depth please... Some books that would throw some light on
1. basics of networks.
2. about IP addresses, sub net mask...
3. some basic network utils and their function like Ping, whois (they
are just names I have read here and there), gopher, archie etc.
4. TCP/IP and other protocols or whatever....
5. www
I won't mind if the networking book is maybe academic... if it has the
latest and the practical info... I have networks in my third year so...
Thanks a lot again..
Sukrit
