Most probable cause may be the "lo" device is not up when starting
sendmail.
After it boots finally check through
$ /sbin/ifconfig
Does it show entry for "lo" ?
And also in /etc/hosts
you should have the entries as below
127.0.0.1 localhost
your.machine.ip.no yourhostname
